This documentary paper deals with the first years of Jozef Mistrík as a secondary school pedagogue at the Business Academy in Trenčín, where he taught since the year 1943. At that time, stenography dominated in his pedagogical and research activities. It was also at that time already, when J. Mistrík acted as a hard-worker gifted with unconventional invention, creativity and originality while searching for the new research areas and topics. He could apply all of these positives in his later multispectral activities in Slovak linguistics.

The contribution is a brief summary of the concept of styleme in Slovak stylistics. At the same time it introduces the concept of styleme in the interactive understood stylistics. The main aim of the contribution is to point out at the effectiveness of the term styleme in contemporary stylistics. The term, introduced to stylistics by Jozef Mistrík, has approved itself as a proper tool for explaining complex stylistic phenomena and relations. While explaining the concept of styleme, the author follows some of the ideas of J. Mistrík, J. Findra, F. Miko, J. Horecký, J. Dolník. In her interactive and interdisciplinary concept of stylistics, styleme is introduced as a cognitive-pragmatic unit of stylistic quality. It is a part of (linguistic) consciousness, realized in a text. Together with the notion of norms, it is an important part of axiological competence. The process of stylization is a process of stylemes activating. The dominant configuration of the stylemes determines the so called expressive style.

The greatest attention in this paper is paid to the compendium on Encyclopedia of Linguistics (Encyklopédia jazykovedy, 1993), edited by Prof. Jozef Mistrík (1921 – 1980). Thanks to the succesfull publication of the encyclopedia, J. Mistrík became, according to some opinions, the pioneers of Encyclopedistics of Linguistics in Slovakia. Currently, the publication might need new edition however, so far it has not beed planed. Some modernisation of the entries and presentation of current views of language is carried out of linguistic entries currently published in the individual volumes of the Encyclopedia Beliana.

The paper reflects the versatility with which Prof. PhDr. Jozef Mistrík, DrSc. (1921–2000) worked in the Studia Academica Slovaca centre, especially as the Director of the Summer School of Slovak Language and Culture. He carried out the function for two decades (1972 – 1991). Under his leadership, the SAS shaped from the point of view of its contents as well as methodology, and became a competitive institution, significantly contributing to the national interdisciplinary Slovakistics and its development abroad. Jozef Mistrík was an author of numerous original projects and products, up to now representing the SAS, but at the same time differentiating it from other institutions of similar focus of activity. With the establishment of the SAS Proceedings 40 years ago began the edition series of specific publication of the papers delivered as lectures during the individual summer schools. In his lectures, Jozef Mistrík presented in a particular manner the results of his academic research, especially in the field of stylistics, frequency research and grammatical and lexical structure of Slovak in confrontation with other languages. Thanks to his managerial and promotional skills, the SAS became popular in media, and its events also started being archived in the SAS chronicles, up to the present day still recording every year of the summer school and specifically giving evidence of the program and the participants of this international event.

The study deals with Professor J. Mistrík’s terminology used in his interpretation of religious texts. It is proved that at the beginning of 1990’s, J. Mistrík identifies the term religious style, which is specific for its attributes such as its connection with a sacral sphere, subjectivity, rituality as well as functional and formal disparity, applying the means from various semiotic fields etc. However, later on, in the last edition of his Stylistics, he leaves this term aside and explains the whole group of communicates from this sphere by the means of more specific terms (the so called secondary styles). Moreover, he explicitly defines liturgical, homiletic and biblical style. The author observes that J. Mistrík realizes that these styles depend on the nature of concrete religion (sometimes called as the hagiolects of particular religious systems), but he also emphasizes the existence of certain universal features and means of this style or these styles regardless of a religious type.
