A particularly important segment of the historical landscape structures in the Tribeč foothills is represented by small sacral objects situated in the open landscape, or placed as solitaires in the historical cores of towns or villages. In addition to being a kind of memento mori – so that humans do not forget the transience of their own lives, they also served as a profane topographical object in defining land boundaries and as a landmark at crossroads. The various chapels, crosses, wayside shrines, bell towers, statues of saints are new challenges for the expansion of research and a “hidden” potential for the construction of national and European identity. Their meaning and symbolism has changed over time, but their overall genius loci and their memory in the country persists to the present day. Although they are often overlooked, they deserve special attention in terms of presentation, protection and targeted heritage care. The study deals with the cultural content of small Christian sacral monuments of folk objects as well as their typology based on a sample of the objects under study (roadside crosses, wayside shrines) in the open modern landscape of the western Tribeč foothills.
