In this paper the author would like to draw the readers’ attention to the role of ethics in the philosophies of Jan Patocka and Jozef Tischner. It is a matter of fact that both these thinkers developed their ideas in the time of totalitarianism, and so their ethical attitudes may be interpreted as a secret weapon against the oppressive power. In the case of the Czech philosopher, the solidarity of the shaken is born in the extreme situation where people become aware of their freedom and responsibility. As far as Tischner is concerned, solidarity is a bond of people who are aware of their moral conscience and who help others who are suffering harm.
