Author describes the process of introduction of modern written Arabic language in education, administration and mass media in the Kingdom of Morocco after achieving independence in 1956. He describes the linguistic situation, which is far from the condition presented in official declarations announcing the success of arabisation. It has direct influence on the shape of the modern Moroccan culture which derives from the heritage of the civilization of Islam and by means of the French language, from European culture.

The article is about searching for cultural authenticity of the Moroccan society – “the country of setting sun” – in the perspective of booming tourism. The first part of the article presents a short characteristic of some chosen aspects of the unusually colorful Moroccan culture. Then, the most important reasons for the disappearance of the genuine face of the country, seized by tourist industry and striving for better future as well as for recognition on the world market, are shown. The attempt to adopt the rules imposed by “the modern times momentum” is often connected with some form of sacrifice as well as the loss of essence of identity and individuality. The next part of the article touches the issue of ethics in tourism. Certain examples help to picture the ethical attitudes visible in the relations between Moroccans and the arriving tourists. Next, the article presents the phenomenon of folclorization and the cultural “show” for tourists, which results from the cultural authenticity disappearance. In the last part of the article, the analysis of a survey carried out among Moroccans is presented. The survey studies the degree of tradition and identity disappearance, as well as the inhabitants’ attitude towards the booming tourism.

This article is based on the author ´s research conducted for the purposes of her thesis in the Moroccan municipality Taghazout. She observed the causes and impacts of important changes as a consequence of (sports) tourism and lifestyle migration. A small fishing village which bore no traces of tourism back to 2010 became a sought-after destination of surfers from all over the world and a centre for foreign investors, which substantially changed its character. The introductory part of the article presents surfing as a lifestyle sport being the primary cause of changes, and describes its history and the sub-culture that it creates. She also presents the phenomenon of lifestyle migration and sports tourism as closely interlinked issues. The study as such focuses on lifestyle migrants in the village and on the impacts of sports tourism and lifestyle migration on the partner relationships of the local population, as the influx of female tourists and lifestyle migrants has resulted in intercultural partner relationships in spite of the traditions of the rather conservative village known for pre-arranged marriages. The expansion of surfing is accompanied by the appearance of unveiled women in a society that gives preference to their veiling (without obliging them to do so), which results in contradictory reactions by the local population.

The concept of capital is one of the key notions which are used in the field of the social sciences. Capital can manifest itself in various forms, both material and immaterial. When it comes to the latter, an example that illustrates it with great accuracy is sainthood, which is the feature that defines the status of marabouts in Morocco and the Maghreb as a whole. From the perspective of Islamic theology, the question of sainthood in Islam is controversial. However, the author of the paper assumes that it is valuable to analyse it from the point of view of the social sciences as there is no doubt that it is a social and cultural resource which has a great impact on the lifestyle and status of an individual who is considered to possess it. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to show that the concept of capital – especially social and cultural capital – can be applied to the phenomenon of sainthood in Islam and to analyse it using the example of Morocco.
