Meletius Smotrytsky’s creative output is almost entirely of a polemical character, since this form and style of scholarly discourse was predominantly used in his times. This method of writing brought him both notoriety and fame. He is to be credited for permanently accommodating the developments of humanistic ideas in the early Baroque period. On the other hand, his changing ideological and religious attitudes, a phenomenon at that time widely regarded as completely natural, led to his recognition as a poet of historical-cultural idealism and religious self-awareness of the Russian people. For Smotrytsky, participation in the life of the Orthodox Church and the Kiev Catholic traditions was the basic principle of scholarly reflection. And owing to his influence this standard also defined the direction of polemical religious conceptions in the first half of the seventeenth century.

There is a copy of Meletius Smotrytsky Grammar, published in 1619 in Yev’ye (Vievis), which is kept in the Library of Vilnius university (the shelf number– Rk 337) nowadays. Despite the fact that the main information about this copy was published in 1908, some of its features were overlooked. The aim of the research is to reveal, by using methods of bibliographical analysis, all the material features of the copy of Smotrytsky Grammar before its release (the structure of the book, types, ornaments) and after it was published (bookbinding, damages and restorations, provenances and annotations). During the research several owners of this copy were identified – three clergymen (priest Grzegorz Sanocki, student of Vilnius Pontifical Seminary Procopius Hucewicz, and Basilian Samuel Nowicki) and several institutions. Procopius Hucewicz and Samuel Nowicki belonged to the Greek Catholic Church of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The newly established facts related to the use of Smotrytsky‘s Grammar by monks offer a basis for further research on the reception and impact of Smotrytsky’s scholarly legacy among the Basilians of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The findings of the study may be valuable for several historical directions; among those of note are studies of the book culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the textual scholarship of the liturgical texts of the Greek Catholic Church.

W artykule omówiono pierwszy w literackiej tradycji Białorusi przekład sonetu. Przeprowadzono analizę literaturoznawczą przekładu 138 sonetu Francesco Petrarki dokonanego przez Meletiusa Smotryckiego na język łaciński i język polski. Przedstawiono analizę porównawczą tłumaczeń Krzysztofa Kraińskiego (przekład na język łaciński i język polski), JurijaWierchowskiego (przekład na język rosyjski), Uładzimira Skarynkina (przekład na język białoruski). Wskazano na cechy wspólne i odejścia od oryginału. Zwrócono uwagę na manipulację w sferze znaczeniowej tekstu. Tłumacze (w wyniku cenzury lub samocenzury) osiągają zamierzony efekt propagandy własnych lub przytoczonych poglądów stosując szczegóły semantyczne wyrażeń synonimicznych, hiperbolizację i rozstawienie akcentów. Jednocześnie obraz autorski i stylistyka zostają zniwelowane.

The first translation of sonnet in Belarusian literary tradition is discussed. The author of the article analyzes the translation of Francesco Petrarch’s Sonnet 138 made by Meletius Smotrytsky (into Latin and Polish). Contrastive analysis of the translations made by Krzysztof Kraiński ( into Latin and Polish), Yuriy Vierkhovskiy (into Russian), Uladzimir Skarynkin (into Belarusian) is suggested. Mutual and contrastive features as well as manipulation in semantic content of the original text have been revealed. Translators (as a result of self-censorship and censorship) achieve an effect of propaganda of their opinions and opinions of others using nuances in the semantics of synonymous expressions, hyperbolization and accent positioning. Authors’ images, reflections and stylistics have been eliminated.
