Metal Music Studies started in 2008. This article describes their genesis and the history of their growth up to the present day. It summarizes the most important publications and lists the academic centers that proved to be crucial for stimulating their growth. The article moves on to describe the main research areas of Metal Studies, supplementing each description with relevant published research examples

W artykule dokonano omówienia wybranych aspektów autobiografii jednego z prekursorów heavy metalu Tony’ego Iommiego. Tekst Iron man. Moja podróż przez niebo i piekło z Black Sabbath rozpatrzony został w kontekście m.in. kategorii pamięci autobiograficznej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na bohaterów narracji oraz wydarzenia specyficzne i przełomowe w życiu artysty.

This article focuses on the some aspects of the autobiography of heavy metal music precursor Tony Iommi. Text Iron man. My journey through the sky and hell with Black Sabbath was considered in the context of category of autobiographical memory. Special attention was paid to the main characters of narrative and to the specific and crucial events of the artist’s life.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki podmiotu mówiącego w twórczości zespołu Nightwish w zestawieniu z romantycznymi koncepcjami poezji, miłości i natury, a także mitem poety „wyklętego”, na którego kreuje się lider grupy Tuomas Holopainen. Tekst porusza kwestie autowizerunku i autentyczności artystów, a także wielokodowości narracji w muzyce rockowej. Analizuje tzw. program literacki zespołu na poziomie słownym, ikonicznym i muzycznym, zaczynając od wczesnej twórczości poprzez album koncepcyjny Century Child i zamykając ostatnim koncertem z udziałem wokalistki Tarji Turunen End of an Era.

The article gives an insight into the problem of lyrical subject in songs recorded by Nightwish, along with the myth of the damned poet led by the group’s leader, Tuomas Holopainen, and romantic concepts of poetry, love and nature. It raises issues of autobiography and authenticity of artists, as well as the multidisciplinary narrative in rock music led on literary, iconic and musical levels. This text focuses primarily on the early Nightwish songs, the Century Child concept album and the End of an Era concert as the last live performance of Nightwish with Tarja Turunen as the lead singer.

Niniejszy szkic jest poświęcony suicie Zmierzch Bogów (1991) szwedzkiej grupy Bathory. W pierwszej kolejności traktuje o historycznym kontekście ukazania się albumu Twilight Of The Gods, na którym owa suita została pomieszczona. Refleksji i interpretacji została poddana zawartość tekstowa tego wydawnictwa, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem aspektów diagnostycznych, formułowanych w stosunku do cywilizacji europejskiej u schyłku XX wieku.

This essay is devoted to the suite titled Twilight of the Gods (1991) of the Swedish Bathory group. The historical context of the Twilight Of The Gods album, where this suite is located, will be discussed in the first place, and the next step in reflection and interpretation will be the textual content of this publication, with particular emphasis on the diagnostic aspects of European civilization at the end of the twentieth century.
