Anglicans and Methodists Together Again? The Restoration of Church Unity between Anglicans and Methodists in Great Britain according to the Document Mission and Ministry in Covenant

The article presents the latest proposal by the Church of England and Methodist Church Faith and Order bodies to restore Anglican–Methodist unity in Great Britain. If mutually adopted, the document titled Mission and Ministry in Covenant would enable the introduction of episcopacy in the British Methodist Church, the presbyteral ordination of Methodist ministers by a bishop, and—as a result—the mutual recognition and interchangeability of presbyteral ministry in both Churches. The proposal concerning the introduction of episcopal ordination in the Methodist Church recommends ordination to the episcopacy of each elected President of Methodist Conference. Thus ordained, the President-bishop would then ordain Methodist presbyters. As regards the Methodist presbyters who were not episcopally ordained, the document proposes the recognition of their ministry by the Church of England in the terms of “bearable anomaly.” Yet, such a solution poses many questions and gives rise to theological doubts.

Artykuł przedstawia próbę znalezienia odpowiedzi na bardzo delikatne i drażliwe społecznie zagadnienie ordynowania homoseksualistów do służby w Kościele. Przeanalizowano, w jakim stopniu argumenty, które znajdujemy w Biblii i Zasadach socjalnych Zjednoczonego Kościoła Metodystycznego, dotyczące homoseksualizmu, determinują podjęcie tak odpowiedzialnej decyzji. Opierając się na konkretnych wersetach, wyjaśniono nastawienie biblijne do omawianego tematu. Ukazano również stanowisko Zjednoczonego Kościoła Metodystycznego do homoseksualistów, ujęte w jego Zasadach socjalnych. Ponadto zaprezentowano podejście do omawianego zagadnienia z perspektywy Kościoła Ewangelicko-Metodystycznego w RP. W podsumowaniu zawarte są odpowiedzi na postawione w poszczególnych partiach artykułu pytania, zakończone końcowym wnioskiem.

The article presents an attempt to find an answer to a very delicate and socially sensitive issue of ordaining homosexuals to serve in the Church. It was analysed to what extent the arguments that we find in the Bible and the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church regarding homosexuality determine making such a responsible decision. Based on specific verses, the Bible’s attitude to the topic is explained. It also cited the United Methodist Church’s position on homosexuals as set out in its Social Principles. In addition, the approach to the discussed issue from the perspective of the Evangelical-Methodist Church in Poland was presented. The conclusion provides answers to the questions raised in each part of the article, ending with a final conclusion.

Dla Lutra praca była powołaniem, Kalwin zaś przez pracę podkreślał potrzebę uwielbienia Boga. Od czasu propozycji Webera i Troeltscha teologię pracy i pochodzenie kapitalizmu omawiano i badano w różnych denominacjach protestanckich, takich jak luteranie, kalwiniści, purytanie i metodyści. U niniejszych wybranych kilku ostatnich teologów protestanckich doceniamy ciągłość i ewolucję w teologii pracy, które prowadzą nas do dziedzictwa zielonoświątkowego w naszych czasach. Niektóre perspektywy powracają do koncepcji contemptus mundi, którą odrzucił Luter, jednak odkrycie działania Ducha Świętego w codziennej pracy wymaga zielonoświątkowej teologii pracy.

For Luther, work was a vocation, while Calvin emphasised the need to glorify God through work. Since the proposal of Weber and Troeltsch, the theology of work and the origin of capitalism has been discussed and studied in different Protestant denominations such as Lutherans, Calvinists, Puritans and Methodists. In this selection of some recent Protestant theologians, we appreciate continuity and evolution in the theology of work that lead us to the Pentecostal inheritance in our days. Some perspectives go back to the contemptus mundi that Luther refused, but the discovering of the action of the Holy Spirit in the daily work needs a Pentecostal theology of the work.

Artykuł przedstawia najnowszą propozycję agend Wiary i Ustroju Kościoła Anglii oraz Kościoła Metody stycznego w Wielkiej Brytanii, aby przywrócić anglikańsko-metodystyczną jedność kościelną w Wielkiej Brytanii. Gdyby obustronnie przyjęto dokument Misja i Służba w Przymierzu, umożliwiłoby to wprowadzenie episkopatu w brytyjskim Kościele Metodystycznym, dokonywanie święceń prezbiteratu duchownych metodystycznych przez biskupa, a w rezultacie wzajemne uznanie i możliwość wymiany posługiwania duchownego w obu Kościołach. Propozycja wprowadzenia święceń biskupich w Kościele Metodystycznym zakłada święcenie do stopnia episkopatu każdorazowo wybieranego Przewodniczącego Konferencji. Następnie tak wyświęcony Prezydent-biskup dokonywałby święceń prezbiterów metodystycznych. Co do prezbiterów metodystycznych, którzy nic zostali wyświęceni przez biskupa, dokument zakłada uznanie ich posługiwania przez Kościół Anglii na zasadzie „znośnej anomalii”. Takie rozwiązanie rodzi jednak wiele pytań i teologicznych wątpliwości.
