Objective - The importance of the role played by Finnish libraries in shaping the information society is discussed and Finnish library law, finances and current computer system are presented. Libraries in Finland are assumed to have significant influence on the promotion of book reading culture and information skills. Research method – Written regulations on the organization and tasks of Finnish libraries are analyzed, completed with authors’ own observations collected during a study trip to Finland. Results and conclusions – It is proved that Finnish libraries working as specialized service providers within local government structures, universities and research institutions, have considerable impact on the development of education and science, increase citizens’ participation in the politics and enhance their orientation in everyday life. Finnish libraries are visibly involved in shaping the information society.

Teza/cel - Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie ważnej roli bibliotek w Finlandii w kształtowaniu społeczeństwa informacyjnego. Omówiono w nim podstawy prawne, finansowanie i system biblioteczny. Ukazano rolę bibliotek w promocji czytelnictwa i wiedzy informacyjnej. Metody badań - Przeanalizowano dokumenty regulujące działalność i organizację bibliotek w Finlandii oraz wykorzystano własne obserwacje z wyjazdu studyjnego. Wyniki i wnioski - Wykazano, że w Finlandii biblioteki, jako wyspecjalizowane placówki usługowe, które działają w ramach samorządów lokalnych, wyższych uczelni i instytucji naukowych w istotny sposób przyczyniają się do rozwoju oświaty i nauki, większego udziału obywateli w życiu politycznym i lepszej orientacji w życiu codziennym. Biblioteki mają swój wkład w kształtowanie się społeczeństwa informacyjnego.
