MODERN CRETAN HYDRONYMS DERIVED FROM HYDROGRAPHIC TERMS In my paper I discussed 590 Cretan water names that derive from Modern Greek hydrographic terms. They represent 12.6% among all the modern hydronyms of the island (4,666 names). As to the structure of the analyzed hydronyms, we can distinguish as many as 564 simple names (95,6%), 19 compounds (3,2%) and 7 elliptical forms (1,2%). It is worth emphasizing that numerous Cretan water names derived from hydrographic terms appear in the plural (113 simple names, i.e., 20.2%). Such a high frequency of the plural forms seems a characteristic feature of the Cretan hydronymy.

Modern Greek dictionaries LKNE (The Institute of Modern Greek Studies, the Manolis Triandafilidis Foundation) and LNEG (Georgios Bambiniotis) are considered canonical. The aim of the analysis is to verify that the meanings of the lemma [orθoδoksía] preserve the status of Orthodox Christianity in Greek society and shape it for the future. Comparisons of dictionary meanings use the lens of semantic-lexical relationships. Analysis of relationships between dictionary meanings and the socio-religious situation considers extra-linguistics factors, including the dictionary users’ profile. Positively verified consistency between the dictionary meaning and the Greek socio-religious situation will mean that the monolingual dictionary preserves and shapes the status of a specific religion in Greek society.

In the paper is discussed as many as 468 Cretan river names, which may derive from the Modern Greek appellatives denoting plants. Floristic names represent 10% of all the modern hydronyms of the island (4666 names). As to the structure of the analyzed floristic names we can distinguish 294 simple names (62,9%), 160 composed names (34,1%) and 14 elliptical names (3%). It is worth emphasizing that 25 floristic river names appeared as early as in the Venetian times (1204–1669). Finally, an exhaustive list of the Modern Greek plant names, which became a basis of deriving numerous Cretan hydronyms, is presented.
