So far research on and descriptions of the Oirat language have placed it in some regions of Inner Asia, including present-day Mongolia, the historical cradle of the Oirat language and culture. As a result of historical and political events in the past its representatives spread into many directions settling down in different parts of Asia. Splitting up, influenced not only their culture and way of life but also their language. As the Oirat language was not uniform (it consisted of seven dialects), sooner or later, it had to assimilate with other languages surrounding. This article deals with changes in the Oirat language spoken in Mongolia, its contemporary users and main phonetic differences in comparison with Modern Mongolian (Khalkha Mongolian – the official language of Republic of Mongolia). It also attempts to find the answer if the Oirat language still exists in Mongolia or it has become one of dialects of Modern Mongolian.
