The article focuses on the perception of the Cossacks serving in the Russian army during Napoleonic wars by those Poles who decided to fight on the side of the “god of war.” The image that emerges from their memoirs is generally free from old sentiments and resentments from the times of the first Commonwealth. The Cossacks are portrayed as brave and tenacious opponents striking unspeakable terror into the French and their German allies, opponents that are nevertheless prone to plunder and various acts of violence; very rarely, however, are they perceived as former fellow citizens. Usually, the Cossacks from the Don River region are correctly distinguished from those from former Zaporizhian Sich.

The Franco-Austrian War in 1809 significantly impacted the life of the inhabitants of Pressburg and its surroundings. The battles for the Pressburg bridgehead started in early June and lasted almost one and a half months. Pressburg itself also suffered several bombing attacks. There are relatively few ego-documents on the events taking place in Pressburg and its surroundings during this period. One of them is a now practically forgotten booklet published in 1809 in the German language titled Preßburg während der Belagerung, oder Beyträge zur Geschichte des Feldzuges von 1809. It was written by Gregor Dankovský, professor of Greek at the Royal Academy in Pressburg. The present paper is a commented Slovak translation of this source important for further research on the history of the city in the Napoleonic War period.

In addition to the limited number of personal sources, the chronicles of some Pressburg monasteries provide valuable evidence of the events of the Franco-Austrian War of 1809 in relation to Pressburg. One of them is the Historia Domus of the Monastery of the Brothers of Mercy deposited in the State Archive in Bratislava. In his paper, the author presents an annotated Slovak translation and transcription of the part of Historie Domus describing the events related to the war of 1809. In order to preserve authenticity, the transcription of the German text, written by a cursive, has been kept in its original form without interference, including contemporary grammar and errors. Abbreviated words are extended in square brackets. In addition to the more or less known facts concerning the siege and subsequent occupation of Pressburg, there is interesting information related to the Order of the Brothers of Mercy, expanding the knowledge about the impact of the Franco-Austrian War of 1809 on life in Pressburg.
