This study looks at the history of museums as a specific historiographical field. It first gives an overview of the various types of publication outputs one can find in this field. These include collection guides, magazine and proceedings studies, and monographs. Studies and proceedings in particular are shown to be practical solutions to the very complex mapping of museum history. Monographs can be of various types – publications about museum buildings are often highly visually impressive, while another type of monographs looks at museum collections, and yet another can be considered the pinnacle of museum historiography, as such monographs provide a comprehensive understanding of museums as organisational and administrative units. Papers already published are an important source for a study of museums, while in contrast there are relatively few texts based on primary archived sources. A detailed investigation of previous publications demonstrates that museum history is focused on and researched always upon the occasion of major jubilees of these institutions, and that this is practically solely the domain of museum employees.

The objective of this paper is to analyse the transformations in the field of museums in Poland, and to study more closely the process of constructing a museum model that meets contemporary challenges. Two types of museums are analysed here, namely national museums and museums of modern art, to demonstrate how their respective activities affect the structure of the field in question, bringing about change. It is the assumption of this study, following Pierre Bourdieu’s framework of conflict perspective, that museums situated in the field of orthodoxy and the ones in the field of heterodoxy compete within the artistic field for a symbolic domination over other participants. At the core interest of this study, there is a question to what extent chosen Polish museums and staff applies the principles of the New Museology in their daily practice.

The article is dedicated to research of the oldest survived Cyrillic copy of Jerusalem Typikon of the last third of the 15th century. The author investigates the problem of its dating, localization of its origin and use. The paper also lists the names of the owners and describes the transfer of the manuscript from Russia to Ukrainian Lviv. The ignorance of the codex by researchers and a lack of publications prompted this scientific study based on a codicological analysis of the external and internal features of the manuscript with methods of the auxiliary sciences of history. The paper argues that the codex is a complex artifact of culture and history.
