Answers of 200 young people (Slovaks) from Hungary and from nationally mixed area of Slovakia on the 10 values list (personal values, social values and ethnic values) offered opportunity to analyse the preference of native language in these two groups of respondents. The main difference between these groups was manifested in the ethnic values section (native language, nationality) which are preferred more in the case of members of the ethnic minority (Slovaks in Hungary). Despite the fact, between the most preferred items in both groups are values „health“, „family“, and „freedom“.

The paper focuses on analysing speech acts in the process of formulating requests in the ‘category width’ cognitive style in a foreign language and native language. We particularly focus on identifying the relation between politeness factors used by broad, medium broad and narrow categorizers in using speech acts of request in a foreign language and native language. Politeness factors are divided into social factors: attention getters, the listener’s (direct formulation of requests) and speaker’s perspective (indirect formulation of requests) and expressive factors: pre-sequences, post-sequences, mitigating devices and minimizers. Our research was carried out on a sample of university students of English, German and Spanish. It is remarkable that narrow categorizers use politeness factors on a larger scale in foreign language than in their native language and broad categorizers use politeness factors more extensively in their native language. Additional research results are discussed in the present paper.

Analysis of 200 young people (Slovaks) from Hungary and from nationally mixed area of Slovakia answers on the scales measuring attitudes to the functions of native language in two specific situational contexts (family, school) led to the identification of the main differences: attitudes of the Slovaks in Hungary are less positive as the attitudes of comparative group and the order of preferred functions of native language (1. value, 2. comprehensive, 3. denominative, 4. cultural) differs from the comparative group too (1. denominative, 2. comprehensive, 3. value, 4. cultural). The situational context demonstrated serious impact on the manifested attitudes of the target group (young Slovaks in Hungary): all 4 identified functions of the language were rated more positively in the school context.

The main purpose of this contribution is to publicize research results of the lingual-communicative behaviour of the Slovak youth in Slovakia and Hungary, which were obtained in both named countries in 2010. We analyse an indicator of the minority ethno-cultural development, as well as three selected components of it – individually and in reciprocal interrelations, as well. The referential framework of this article consists of two analytical levels:- analysis of opinions relating to the development of the national culture (Slovak or Hungarian), native language (Slovak or Hungarian) and national education (Slovak or Hungarian), - analysis of mutual contexts of research participant opinions (individual groups about ethno-cultural development of minorities with regard to the identification indicators of research participants (locality, family, education).

This article is concerned with texts by Frantisek Cermak devoted to issues of Czech language cultivation. Four major topics are analyzed: standard vs. common Czech, written vs. spoken Czech, prescriptivism and the native language of Czechs. Various problems in the analyzed texts result from an unclear methodological background. Many concepts are used without argumentation: Cermak fails to substantiate their suitability for his language description. We can find uncorroborated generalizations which can be interpreted as Cermak's communicative strategy. Many statements are rather impressionistic and are not based on relevant language observations. With regard to these findings, the author of this paper argues that a deep-reaching dialogue should be held, which may help to clarify the indeterminate situation in Czech linguistics concerning issues of language cultivation.
