Technologie informacyjno-komunikacyjne (ICT) są powszechnie uznawane za istotny czynnik wpływający na zmiany zarówno w codziennym życiu, jak i gospodarce. Rozwój i upowszechnienie ICT wskazuje się jako powód poprawy produktywności, przyspieszenia tempa wzrostu gospodarczego czy poprawy konkurencyjności zarówno podmiotów rynkowych, jak i całych gospodarek narodowych. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie poziomu wykorzystania ICT w wybranych państwach zachodniej hemisfery. W artykule zostanie przeprowadzona analiza dostępnych wskaźników opisujących wykorzystanie ICT. Przeanalizowane zostaną wskaźniki opisujące gotowość do wykorzystania ICT (NRI) oraz konkurencyjność gospodarki w kontekście zaawansowania ICT (GCI).

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are widely recognized as an important factor influencing changes both in everyday life and in the economy. The development and dissemination of ICT is seen as an indicator for improving productivity, accelerating economic growth or improving the competitiveness of both market players and entire national economies. The aim of this article is to examine the level of ICT use in selected western hemisphere countries. Stated goal will be achieved by an analysis of available, aggregated, indicators describing the development of ICT. Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and Networked Readiness Index (NRI) will be analysed.

Knowledge and know-how of calculation methods of indicators and indices allow to evaluate, compare and correlate if not fully then to a considerable extent the situation in different countries and regions of the world. Moreover, in countries with "transitional economy" to which Russia and other countries of former Soviet Union are attributed to, the situation has significantly changed and it is necessary to adjust the directions and perspectives of development considering the changed environment.The article characterizes a position of Russia and other CIS's countries (Commonwealth of Independent States) on the international rating of Human Development Index and Networked Readiness Index.

This paper focuses on the measurement of information society. The aim of this paper is twofold. The first objective is to present a coherent picture of measurement methods for information society. The second aim of the paper is to show measurement findings of information society in selected countries – especially Poland. First, the paper presents available methods of information society measurement and a core set of internationally agreed information society indicators. Second, the measurement of information society was performed with the application of three methods – measuring the influence of ICT on GDP, measuring the ICT Development Index and measuring the Networked Readiness Index. Finally, a discussion was undertaken in order to establish a framework for the development of information society’s quantitative measurement methods.
