Although various authors have dealt with the history and architectural history of Oponice Castle, only the archival research that was carried out in 2020 has significantly extended the existing data related to the modern era. After the combination of its findings with results from archaeological, dendrochronological and constructional-historical research, using an interdisciplinary approach, it has been possible to match several phases of construction within the modern era with the names of the people who initiated them. The “Tereš” bastion, typical of the present-day ruins, was constructed before 1586, after a decision made by Blažej Apponyi Snr. The widespread reconstructions made in the late Renaissance period that followed the property division of the 29th April 1612 completely changed the character of the castle and also substantially affected its silhouette, giving the castle a distinctive appearance that has been preserved until today. Brothers Peter (†1626) and Pavol Apponyi enriched their south-western half of the castle with a large rectangular palace with a remarkable length of 50 metres and as many as five floors. Another ceremonial palace building, on the opposite side, on the north-eastern perimeter of the castle, was initiated by Blažej Apponyi Jr. (†1637). It had a rectangular floor plan covering an area of 27 m x 14.5 m and reached up four floors.

A stone architectural segment was discovered in the area of the Oponice castle's upper castle during archaeological excavation in 2018. It probably comes from an entry portal and was carved with a Renaissance coat of arms with the motive of a four-legged animal on which the bird sits. The coat of arms probably belongs to the Horváth family. They are mentioned in the historical written sources as castellans at the Oponice castle in the second half of the 16th and the first half of the 17th century. In addition, in this time there are other proofs of the relationship between the Horváth family and the Aponi family, who had owned the castle from the end of 14th, respectively the beginning of the 15th century.

The paper is focused on the analysis of the movable archaeological material from the 13th to 17th century, which was found on the Oponice castle during the archaeological excavations in 2015 and 2016. Excavation was carried by the Department of Archaeology of the Philosophical Faculty at the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra. Evaluated are as well as unpublished finds obtained at the time of remediation and reconstruction works, which provided at the castle by the Apponiana Citizens Association since 2001. Collection of finds can be typologically divided into nine categories – pottery, stove tiles, ceramic tiles, glass, metal artefacts, coins, a bone object, plaster, and animal bones.

Stove tiles with the motifs of Saints with their typical attributes under the Gothic vault appear on the extensive territory of the northern part of the Carpathian Basin. Their production in the last quarter of the 15th century was concentrated in the manufactory in Banská Bystrica, which ceased to exist in the fire of the town in 1500. According to the latest findings, the so-called Banská Bystrica type of stove tiles also appears in the following period. This means that the production of the manufactory either continued after the fire, or the manufactory controlled the stove production of smaller local workshops in the wider range. New findings of the stove tiles with the depiction of St. Margaret were found during the excavations of the Oponice Castle. The aim of the paper is to include them into the series of Banská Bystrica Saints, to evaluate the current state of research and to introduce a new perspective on the issue of stove tile production.

Rotary mills or their stone parts, i. e. quern stones and millstones, occur only exceptionally at medieval and post-medieval castles – unlike the rural environment. The quern stone discovered in 2018 in the northern part of the castle courtyard near the eastern wall of Oponice castle’s barbacan (Topoľčany district) is one of such exemplars. By its shape and size, we can assume that originally it was a La Tène quern. It was secondarily adapted and used as the rotating part of a hand mill probably during the castle’s existence. The objective of our article is to explain the function of the unusual quern stone at Oponice castle and use of grinding tools at medieval and post-medieval castles.
