The article presents the results of an empirical study carried out within the “Open Research Platform” (ORP) subproject of “European Collaborative and Open regional Innovation Strategies” (EURIS). In the frame of this subproject a survey was carried out to investigate companies’ technology transfer practices with universities in four regions of the European Union, i.e. Navarra (Spain), Lodz region (Poland), Stuttgart region (Germany) and Western-Transdanubia (Hungary). The main objectives of the investigation were to explore: i) to what extent knowledge transfer activities at higher education institutions and research organizations serve the open innovation model? and ii) what the role is of higher education institutions in the technology transfer system of the examined regions? In the first section, the relevance of the survey under the open innovation paradigm is discussed then the main conclusions of the survey are presented. Finally, an open innovation collaboration model is introduced that provides both companies and universities with some suggestions to make their collaboration more effective

The goal of the article is to identify the role of individual customers in implementation of improvements and innovative solutions in service-related banking products against the background of theoretical demands of the concept of open innovations and demand approach to innovations. It is assumed that banks use their customers as an external source of ideas while applying the open innovation models. In the case of mass segment they are mostly forums of ideas and task models based on communication on the Internet. In the segment of personal and private banking they apply prosumption. Secondary study in the form of critical analysis of literature and with the use of documentary research method is performed in the paper. The method of qualitative research – case study research that illustrates best practices is also applied.

This paper examines the role of open innovation inward technology transfer in order to strengthen the innovative position of Polish enterprises. The problem for Polish companies is their low interest in open sources of innovation which in a modern economy based on innovativeness, highly processed and technologically advanced products is a very important source of competitiveness superiority. On the other hand open innovation sources are less expensive and risky especially for the companies without any business experience and financial resources. The objective of this article is to shed a light on the role of the open innovation sources in technology transfer process within Polish enterprises. The work aims to provide a better characterization and understanding of open innovation as a part of technology transfer in the light of formal and informal flows. The objective of this paper is also to examine the statistical data collected from the Main Statistic Office in Poland relating to the technology transfer of entrepreneurs and its influence on the innovativeness of a company.

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja modelu otwartych innowacji oraz analiza zakresu jego adaptacji w przemyśle biofarmaceutycznym. W pierwszej części przedstawiono model otwartych innowacji oraz jego znaczenie dla innowacyjności współczesnych organizacji. W drugiej części pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań własnych opartych na studium przypadku, którego przedmiotem była firma AstraZeneca, znajdująca się w czołówce firm biofarmaceutycznych na świecie. Przeanalizowano zakres adaptacji modelu w odniesieniu do działalności badawczo-rozwojowej oraz wspierania innowacyjności. Przedstawiono przykłady otwartych innowacji odnoszące się do typów modeli procesów, różnych form relacji oraz wykorzystania nowych technologii informatycznych.

The purpose of this article is to present an open innovation model and explore its application in the pharmaceutical industry. In the first part, the article presents the open innovation framework and its implications for innovation in pharmaceutical companies. In the second part, the case study research results of one the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies, AstraZeneca are presented. The paper investigates the adoption of the model with regards to drug discovery and development process and promoting an innovative approach. It examines different modes of open innovation, types of initiatives undertaken by the company, and the incorporation of novel technologies.
