The law on national and ethnic minorities and regional language passed by the Polish Parliament regulates the rules of introducing additional place names and street names in German. It was commonly expected that adoption of this law would solve the problems, abate the emotions and mitigate apparent controversies connected with the expression of distinctness by national minorities. An attempt to describe the introduction of German places names in Upper Silesia is presented against the background of similar experiences in Poland and Europe. They show that the problem of bilingual place names is related to the emotional rather than the pragmatic sphere of life and is a visible element of the “policy of remembrance”. The most intense emotions and discussions were triggered by the introduction of additional names in German and Lemko. This demonstrates that the baggage of a troubled past has an enormous significance for the way in which those minorities are perceived today.

Social side of agricultural co-operatives. The case of agricultural production co-operatives in the Opole voivodeship

The aim of the article is to describe the social side of agricultural co-operatives and also to analyse what factors can in- or decrease this part of activity of agricultural production co-operatives (APCs). In the introduction to the article a definition of the aim of the paper, is provided, as well as a short explanation what the APCs really are. Next, the article describes the social side of activity of agricultural co-operatives. Then it presents how to measure it using the rate of social activity (RSA) proposed by the author. The last part of the article is the analysis, based on the data collected from the 28 APCs that operate in the Opole voivodeship shows the influence of selected factors on social activity in co-operatives. The findings show what and how strongly can increase the social activity in agricultural cooperatives.

Celem artykułu jest opisanie społecznej strony spółdzielni rolniczych oraz przeanalizowanie, jakie czynniki mogą zwiększać lub zmniejszać tę część działalności w przypadku rolniczych spółdzielni produkcyjnych (RSP). We wstępie sformułowano cel opracowania oraz umieszczono krótkie wyjaśnienie, czym są RSP. Następnie w artykule zaprezentowano społeczną stronę działalności spółdzielni rolniczych. W kolejnej części przedstawiono, w jaki sposób można ją mierzyć, wykorzystując wskaźnik działalności społecznej (WDS) zaproponowany przez autorkę. W ostatniej części artykułu, na podstawie danych zebranych z 28 RSP działających na Opolszczyźnie, dokonano analizy wpływu wybranych czynników na działalność społeczną spółdzielni. Wyniki pokazują, co i z jaką siłą wpływa na działalność społeczną spółdzielni rolniczych.

In her biographical account, Urszula Pogoda sheds light on everyday life in the rural Opole region. She focuses in particular on the period of childhood, while her reminiscences include references to events that were important on both a regional level, such as the construction of the Pilgrims’ Home on St. Anne Mountain, and at an international level, such as the Upper Silesian Tragedy or the postwar shifting borders, as a result of which the area of today's Opole region and its inhabitants became the subjects of a new state. This account was recorded in November 2016 by Karolina Domańska during the realization of the project titled: “Postwar Everyday Life in the Opole Region as Remembered by Its Inhabitants” financed by the “Remembrance and Future” Centre in Wroclaw as part of the sixth edition of the Oral History Grant.

Urszula Pogoda w swojej relacji biograficznej przybliża życie codzienne na opolskiej wsi. Szczególną uwagę poświęca okresowi dzieciństwa, zaś wśród jej wspomnień znalazły się nawiązania do wydarzeń istotnych zarówno w skali regionu, jak np. budowa Domu Pielgrzyma na Górze św. Anny, jak i w skali międzynarodowej, jak np. Tragedia Górnośląska czy powojenna zmiana granic skutkująca m.in. zmianą przynależności państwowej terenu dzisiejszego województwa opolskiego i jego mieszkańców. Relacja została zarejestrowana w listopadzie 2016 r. przez Karolinę Domańską w trakcie realizacji projektu „Powojenne życie codzienne na ziemi opolskiej we wspomnieniach mieszkańców”, sfinansowanego przez Ośrodek „Pamięć i Przyszłość” we Wrocławiu w ramach szóstej edycji „Grantu Oral History”.
