Korespondencja św. Eugeniusza de Mazenoda z Kongregacją Rozkrzewienia Wiary jest szczególnie interesująca. To rzeczywisty mąż apostolski, który posłał misjonarzy na wszystkie kontynenty. Równocześnie jest jedynym biskupem francuskim kanonizowanym od chwili powstania Kongregacji ds. Świętych, św. Jan Paweł wybrał go na osobistego patrona w dziele nowej ewangelizacji. Artykuł najpierw ukazuje kontekst tej korespondencji, zarysowując wizję życia duchowego misjonarzy oraz świat wewnętrznych wartości i przekonań św. Eugeniusza. Potem nastepuje analiza korespondencji z Kongregacją, korespondencji dotyczącej misji w Oregonie i na Cejlonie. W obu wypadkach św. Eugeniusz wyraża zdecydowane niezadowolenie z miejscowych biskupów, a bierze w obronę misjonarzy. Odnośnie do Oregonu, św. Eugeniusz ubolewa nad niedojrzałością ludzką tamtejszych biskupów, braci Blanchet oraz nad ich ignorancją podstawowej zasady życia zakonnego, jaką jest życie i posługiwanie we wspólnocie. Główną problematyką listów w sprawie misji na Cejlonie jest natomiast tubylcze duchowieństwo z Goa. Pozbawieni są gorliwości oraz hamują gorliwość Misjonarzy Oblatów MN. Sytuację pogarszają wewnętrzne tarcia między tamtejszymi biskupami, którzy się wzajemnie lekceważą i walczą między sobą o wpływy.

The correspondence of St. Eugene de Mazenod with the Congregation for the Promotion of Faith is particularly interesting. He is a real apostolic man. He sent missionaries to all continents. At the same time, he is the only French bishop canonized since the founding of the Congregation for Saints and St. John Paul II chose him as his personal patron in the work of the new evangelization. First, the article presents the context of this correspondence outlining the vision of the spiritual life of the missionaries and the world of inner values and beliefs of St. Eugene. The article then analyzes the correspondence with the Congregation regarding the missions in Oregon and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In both cases St. Eugene expresses a strong dissatisfaction with the local bishops and he defends the missionaries. Regarding Oregon, St. Eugene deplores the human immaturity of the local bishops, the Blanchet brothers and their ignorance of the fundamental principle of religious life, which is life and service in the community. The main problem of the letters regarding the mission in Ceylon is the indigenous clergy from Goa. They lack zeal and inhibit the zeal of the Missionary Oblates. The situation is worsened by the relations between the local bishops, who disregard each other and fight for influence.

Artykuł dotyczy twórczości Kelly Reichardt – reżyserki, która od połowy lat 90. pozostaje jedną z kluczowych postaci amerykańskiego kina niezależnego. Wychodząc od założeń badaczy skoncentrowanych na zagadnieniu krajobrazu, autor przygląda się podejściu Reichardt do pejzażu jako takiego oraz charakteryzuje wizję stanu Oregon obecną w jej produkcjach. Przywoływane w tekście wypowiedzi Reichardt potwierdzają, jak istotne było dla niej poznanie Jonathana Raymonda – pisarza i przyszłego scenarzysty opisywanych w artykule dzieł. W kolejnych filmach – zwłaszcza tych, którym w tekście poświęcono najwięcej uwagi (Old Joy /2006/, Meek’s Cutoff /2010/, Pierwsza krowa /First Cow, 2019/) – oboje nie tylko przyglądali się stanowi z północno-zachodniego wybrzeża USA, ale też wykorzystali tamtejsze lokacje do nakreślenia portretu współczesnej amerykańskiej prowincji. Opowiedzieli o niej, operując poetyką slow cinema i odnosząc się do gatunku westernu.

The article concerns the work of Kelly Reichardt – a film director who since 1995 is regarded as one of the most prominent representatives of American independent cinema. Starting with the observations of researchers theorizing landscape, the author analyses Reichardt’s approach to landscape as such and describes the vision of Oregon present in her work. The director’s statements cited in the article confirm the importance of meeting the writer Jonathan Raymond – the future screenwriter of the discussed productions. In their subsequent films – especially those that are at the centre of author’s interest (Old Joy /2006/, Meek’s Cutoff /2010/, First Cow /2019/) – not only did they look at Oregon, but also used the Pacific Northwest state’s locations to portray contemporary American country. In doing so, they used the poetics of slow cinema and conventions of the western genre.

This article is devoted to the extraordinary personality of Makar Afanas’evich Zeniukhin (1938-2020) a Bespopovets Old Believer belonging to Chasovennye Denominationfrom Xinjiang, and to his lifelong ordeals while migrating from China through Argentina toWoodburn, Oregon, and ending up in the Siberian Dubchessky Monastery, Russia. The accountof his life reflects the consequences of the twenty-first century split in the Old Believerscommunities among the Oregonian Bespopovets Old Believers. It also describes MakarZeniukhin’s dialect, including the characteristic features of his language variation on differentlevels. The research is based on the method of scientific description and discourse analysis thatstudies his language recorded during our conversations between 2004 and 2014. The article alsodescribes his written language based on letters sent to us from the Siberian Dubchessky Monastery. Makar Zeniukhin’s oral narrations, coherent stories, and written letters are of particular value as historical and ethnographic resources depicting the events and life of Old Believers in Oregon, USA.
