In the summer of 2007, the 24th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities conducted a small excavation in the Kontopodis field, located approximately 1 km northwest of the village of Meseleroi in the Ierapetra region (Fig. 1). This work was deemed necessary as the owner of the field had previously uncovered several vases and other objects during plowing. This rich assemblage, which will form the subject of another article, contained decorated pottery of high quality, metal vases, and other funerary goods (including the abax of a Pergamene capital) that can be dated to the Orientalizing period. A preliminary study of that assemblage shows interesting affinities with the finds from the Arkades cemetery at the eastern end of the Messara plain.
