The article compares the concepts of culture of German historian Oswald Spengler and American anthropologist Alfred Louis Kroeber. They both shared interest in comparative study of civilizations and some similar approaches to it, based on an assumption, that culture is a distinct level of reality. It means that it is nonreducible to its parts, but on the contrary it controls them. This conception is sometimes refered to as superorganic. Their motivations for adopting this peculiar conception vary and hence it carries some different implications for each of them. The concepts and methods that follow from it are analyzed in this work. The explicit comparison is made in the end of the work.

Thanatological considerationsin the novel Bad Eternity by Georgii Peskov The literary pseudonym Georgii Peskov belonged to Elena Deisha, the representative of the “younger generation” of the writers of the first wave of the Russian emigration, the author of the novel Bad Eternity (1932). The story primarily focuses on thanatological considerations, which are conducted from a range of perspectives: one of those is the issue of suicide, treated as a victory over death; another one is the question of immortality — the librarian is truly obsessed about being immortal; some attention is also drawn to the problem of ageing as a phenomenon closely related to dying; finally, an act of murder is committed. Considering the thematic ideology, the issue is mentioned of the extinction of the European civilization. Georgii Peskov’s artistic thanatology was strongly influenced by the overall spirits of the era as well as the philosophical considerations expressed by Oswald Spengler, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Vladimir Solovyov.

Problematyka tanatologicznaw opowieści Zła wieczność Gieorgija Pieskowa Pod pseudonimem Gieorgij Pieskow ukrywała się Elena Dejsza, przedstawicielka „młodszego pokolenia” pisarzy pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej, autorka opowieści Zła wieczność (1932). W utworze istotne miejsce zajmuje problematyka tanatologiczna.

The author considers the problem of civilization. He defines civilization as a determinate form of man’s group life, or man’s culture in its social dimension. According to the author, a plurality of civilizations is generally accepted; in civilization, one can see the foundations for the functioning of law, politics, social life, and family life; civilization also plays an essential role in the religious life of man, just as religion plays a role in civilization. The author discusses the following topics: the biological theory of civilization, the historical theory of civilization, the sociological theory of civilization, the political-science theory of civilization, the civilization of death and the civilization of love, and the historical-philosophical theory of civilization.
