In papal addresses published on the occasion of the International Day of Peace, one can find many inspiring thoughts concerning the problems of peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. The thoughts of the popes Paul VI and John Paul II are interesting insofar as it is far from stereotypes. The addresses relate not only to the political, but also to the problems of everyday life. Peace is not a static reality but demands development. Reconciliation is not equivalent to rejection of justice and truth, but it is its fulfillment.

This thesis is a result of a careful thought on what peace is and what its essential features, aims and necessary conditions are. I have proposed a notion that inner peace of individuals making up a given community (especially of leadership elites) is conducive to collective safety, while significant disturbance of the inner peace of a certain group of individuals results in a global unrest, often on an international scale. In an attempt to approach the subject in a comprehensive manner I justified that inner peace of individuals leads to global inner and outer peace. I also conducted lexical analyses aimed at identifying identical, synonymous and antonymous terms with the word, „peace”. I indicated the main reasons for war and the conditions for keeping peace, emphasizing the significance of pedagogics in the prophylaxis of war and in the spreading of the culture of peace. I also proposed a classification of philosophical and pedagogical attitudes of intellectuals devoting their efforts to the concept of peace throughout the history of humankind and in the world of today. I presented argumentation confirming the assumption that the culture of peace results from a certain upbringing process based on a democratic existence of parents with their child. My praxeological propositions include the educational and prophylactic function of biographies of individuals commonly recognized as promoters of peace. I also provided an outline of the upbringing programs aimed at children and the youth, and serving the role of strengthening peace and public safety.

The article briefly deals with the beginning and history of the traditional Christian doctrine of 'a just war'. Thereby it builds up a groundwork for the reflection of contemporary affirmations in the official Catholic Church documents which further develop this doctrine. It discusses the justification of war, particularly with respect to a potential threat of a nuclear conflict and an immediate threat to humanity of worldwide terrorism. It examines possible and justifiable means needed for better understanding and the preservation of peaceful co-existence in Christian ethical thinking.

The study offers the profile of life and work of M.J. Metzger, priest and martyr at the time of National Socialism in Germany and it presents his personal involvement in the pacifistic movement and in its national and transnational structures. Based on his articles and lectures the article is able to see his tangible encouraging approach and perspective of his theology of peace. Its fundamental elements are constituted by: international reconciliation as a principle of international peace; the foundation of peace is truth, justice, love; upholding of human rights; implementation of Christian politics regarding the overcoming of any nationalism; future federation of European states; peace as a category of the kingdom of God; shared responsibility of all Christians in social and moral questions; the criticism of failure to respond according to the spirit of Gospel; refusing of war and arm race; the peace as a problem of education. The second part of the study is concerned with the enforcement of his attitudes at the time of National Socialism and in consequence his persecution as ideological archenemy of regime, his imprisonment and execution. In the end we offer the ecclesiological and theological valuation of personage, in the last analysis as a significant figure and relevant theologian of the first half of the twentieth century, credited with rebuilding the Church, first of all on the field of ecumenism and practical life of faith of people moving toward a vision of the Church of The Second Vatican Council.

The article highlights the uniqueness of the city of Jerusalem through the original, mystical qualities of this famous Jerusalem artist. Rakia perceives both the ethereal and the earthly Jerusalem, uniting them into a perfect singularity that constitutes the core of the world. Through the application of three elements, the artist combines imagination and originality in his successful creation of authentic images of the city. He conveys a mystical spirituality through the purity of light; content and biblical-historical-religious associations are added through the use of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet; through his choice of one dominant color that might not be realistic , he bestows upon the holy city both a realistic and imaginary-spiritual character that accurately reflect its rare complexity.

This article analyses the dynamics and tactics of the communists in Asia in the immediate aftermath of the Korean War, linking the issue of armistice supervisit on the Korean Peninsula through the Neutral Nations' Supervisory Commission (NNSC – of which Poland and Czechoslovakia were members alongside Sweden and Switzerland) to the genesis of the International Control and Supervisory Commission in Southeast Asia (ICC – of which Poland became a member alongside Canada and India). The article argues that Poland, by acting for its own interests and as both an agent for Moscow and Beijing, which called for easing East-West tensions, moderated the Cold War in Asia to some degree while cautiously pursuing the communist cause. The article shows that North Korea contributed to the Cold War's intensification by adopting hard-line approaches in dealing with the West. The article further suggests that although neither Beijing nor Prague may have wanted to exacerbate the Cold War, problems of insubordination (and misunderstandings) contributed to Czechoslovak and Chinese military officials on the Korean Peninsula to cause tensions that went against the goals of the communist camp of relaxing East-West relations. The article concludes that both the Soviets and the Chinese needed an Eastern European country in Southeast Asia that could do both: advance the communist cause and be appealing to the West. The Poles, unlike thein Czechoslovak counterparts in the NNSC, seemed to be the match, especially since they were able to exhibit these two tendencies while serving on the Korean Peninsula. These flexible approaches most likely landed Poland a job as a member of the ICC. Finally, the article shows that the communist world was not always a united and monolithic entity as disputes and disagreements abounded, and that smaller nations like Czechoslovakia, North Korea, and Poland were active players with their own agendas and interests.
