The outcome of the project entitled Man in Moravia is a four-volume social history of Moravia in the period between the end of the 18th century and the end of the 20th century. The main aim of the project focusing on important personalities and the so-called socio-professional characters is to create an overview of Moravian social history. The secondary aims are to incite a discussion about social history among the members of the scholarly community and to invite researchers who excel in the issues of local provenience. The project included 8 editors with different specializations and 60 experts from universities, Academy of Science and archives. The project is part of the Centre for Studies in Central European History: Sources, Countries, Culture which has been co-ordinated by Jiri Malir at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University since 2005.

The essay maps relationships of particular members of the Jirecek family with the architect and patron of the Czech science, Josef Hlavka. It hints on some less known aspects of the Czech Academy of the Sciences and the Arts (CAVU) origin and suggests that the Jirecek family was very friendly with the Hlavka family. Of the Jirecek family, Josef Jirecek was the closest to Josef Hlavka and the person most strongly linked with the establishment of CAVU. His work for the architect and builder Josef Jirecek, his role as Hlavka's expert adviser and lawyer, his considerate influence on Hlavka and empathy with his conditions and problems have not yet received appropriated attention. J. Jirecek participated in preparatory phases of establishing the CAVU: he talked Hlavka out of selling the Luzany estate and thus had merit in maintaining one of the principal sources of its financing. He prepared for Hlavka dedicative documents for establishing a foundation, which supported Czech science and art. Unlike his brother Hermenegild and son Konstantin, Josef Jirecek did not become a member of CAVU, because he died in 1888 and did not live to see its official establishment in 1892. The relation between Josef Hlavka and Hermenegild Jirecek had a character of mutual admiration. Konstantin Jirecek tended to regard the patron of Czech science with disrespect, which is a common practice with young generation.

The article presents the reminiscences of the 1970’s to 1990’s by two prominent historians of the textile industry in the Czech lands – Dr. Jaroslav Šůla and Pr. Vladimír Wolf. In those years they were both actively involved in the historical research of the textile industry in the Czech lands, primarily in the East Bohemian region. They were both among the important organizers of the science world – among editors and authors of many scientific publications, studies and anthologies, in particular the Flax industry (periodical, est. 1976) and its supplement (since 1981). Their memories are concluded with the early 1990s which, however, put an end to the scientific stations studying the history of the textile industry and also terminated the publishing of the Flax Industry magazine including its supplements.
