The author presents the unique results of research into the personnel function in virtual network-based companies. By following changes, a virtualization of the personnel function is diagnosed (e-Human Resources Management).

The article examines the mutual interactions between the personnel function and the life cycle of an organisation. It discusses in detail L. Greiner’s concept of the life cycle of an organisation, which includes among its premises such factors as the age of the organisation, its size and the pace of growth of the sector in which it operates. In this cycle, organisations pass through five stages, in each of which the personnel function plays the crucial role of enabling the organisation to prepare appropriately for the next stage of growth while at the same time easing the results of the crises which take place between those stages.

This article constitutes a detailed case study on the evolution on the personnel function in Zywiec Group that followed from the restructuring of the member breweries of the capital group. It covers the process of integration of the Group and changes to the human resources management system. It also contains theoretical reflections upon the role of HR specialists in the process of the integration of the companies. The organization of the personnel function has been presented here against a period spanning 3 years of GO activity (wider range of HR responsibility, increase in the number of specialists employed in HR, lower age, higher level of education).

Creation and implementation of innovations in the enterprise is conditioned by the presence of appropriate human potential formed in the process of the personnel function realization. In the article an analysis has been performed of how the personnel function can support the creation and implementation of innovations in the company. The author used the literature studies as well as own conclusions and the results of empirical research conducted in 35 companies in Lower Silesia.
