This paper presents the compilation principles of the Polish-Slovak Dictionary – a publication that is being prepared within the project of the Slovak-Polish Commission for the Humanities at the Slovak Ministry of Education and the Polish Ministry of Education. The concept focuses on the characteristics of the dictionary in terms of its macrostructure and microstructure. The following parameters of the dictionary entries are described: entry word, pronunciation, word-class and morphological characteristics, functional qualifiers, translation equivalents and phrases. The principles presented reflect current approaches in lexicographical theory and practice and are based on the compilation principles of the most recent explanatory dictionaries of the Slovak language and the Polish language. The unsatisfactory situation in the Polish-Slovak bilingual lexicography is also briefly pointed out, the reasons for the current absence of a Polish-Slovak dictionary of medium or large size are named, and a publication vision is outlined.

The paper pursues the following objectives: 1. to point out the differences in the criteria (aspects) of lexeme evaluation in the most recent explanatory dictionaries of the Polish and Slovak languages, which is related to the differences in the typology and number of functional qualifiers; 2. Describe the differences in the internal subdivision of individual types of functional qualifiers into sub qualifiers in the explanatory dictionaries of the Polish and Slovak languages; 3. Introduce the system of functional qualifiers in the Polish-Slovak Dictionary, which is being compiled within the framework of the Slovak-Polish Commission of Humanities at the Slovak and Polish Ministries of Education. Comparison of functional qualifiers in contemporary Polish and Slovak lexicographical works shows the problematic nature of this phenomenon. On the basis of the analysis of qualifiers, specific differences between lexicographical sources at both the intra-lingual and inter-lingual levels are named, with which the author of a translation dictionary, using also explanatory dictionaries in his work, has to cope.
