The article describes the genesis and modern manifestations of the involvement of an African state in tribal structures. The description of historical and cultural conditions and political phenomena typical of the entire continent is illustrated with examples from Cameroon. The analysis starts with the concept of post-tribal society, in which elements of culture and social structure, typical of the tribal society (traditional sources of prestige, collectivism, dominance of blood ties and ethnocentric attitudes) are mixed with institutions and principles imported from Western culture (the concept of nation, parliamentary system, social relations based on free relations and individualistic attitudes). The analysis of the legal status and political functions of tribal chiefs in the social life of Cameroon leads to the conclusion that they are de facto and de iure the modern emanation of the 'class of native intermediaries'.

The article describes leadership concepts developed in political anthropology from its very beginnings until modern times. The author tries to trace the history of anthropological reflection on political leadership and shows how its understanding in different theoretical orientation was changing. These changes are discussed against the background of socio-political transformations taking place in the Western world. The article presents the views of evolutionists, classical functionalist concepts of leadership and their subsequent modifications made by representatives of processualism and the theory of action as well as the concepts of power and authority developed by neo-evolutionists. The last part of the article addresses most recent studies on leadership in the post-colonial world and in pluralist Western societies. The history of anthropological studies on leadership shows how its understanding has evolved - from formal understanding, when leadership was perceived as a category identical to an exercise of power, to approaches in which leadership is understood as a dynamic structure, an aspect of social practice inseparably connected to other areas of culture such as kinship, power, prestige, religion, economics or law.

The study argues that Mill’s essay The Subjection of Women is a significant contribution to his ethical and socio-political thought. For his practical philosophy, the text is indispensable since it presents a more complex understanding of human being than given in his work On Liberty. The study argues that his later essay on the subjection of women implies a view of human being as inter-subjectivity. The human being is a vulnerable subject dependent on the relations with other people and society which forms its personality and character. Furtherly, the article argues that Mill’s essay implies a more complex understanding of privacy than one can find in On Liberty. The borderline between the private and the social or public sphere is not and cannot be impervious, as the separate reading of the book On Liberty might suggest. Last but not least, the study shows that a question of emancipation and gender equality is nothing of secondary importance to Mill since the realization of the utilitarian ethics requires the transformation of human beings and alternation of characters, which is not achievable in the condition of radical inequality.
