The aim of the paper is to describe, through the text analysis, how the media allied with the pro-independence elites have been describing the Taiwanese - seen as a whole - during the presidential campaign of 2004. The analyzed materials came from the two main pro-independence dailies, namely the Chinese language Ziyou Shibao (Liberty Times) and the English language Taipei Times. The author concludes that within the analyzed collection of articles, the question of lack of cultural markers of Taiwanese identity was commonly mentioned. Within the analyzed texts some attempts to create a Taiwanese group (nation) images had been made. If the Taiwanese as a group or nation were seen as lacking precise cultural traits, nevertheless they seemed to be a politically defined group. The author concludes with a statement that since the separate Taiwanese culture was not perceived as a group marker, the boundary between Taiwanese and the Chinese had to be built on something else. This boundary was thus created following de facto (but not de iure) political border between the PRC and the ROC.

September 11 and the rise of global anti-Americanism since the Iraq War have raised concerns in American society about the US's image in the world and led to the contestation of the concept of the enemy as had been elaborated by the Bush administration. This concern has had a profound impact in American cultural production, and particularly on American cinema, and has shaped the demand for a change of policy that would restore the moral status of the US. Barack Obama, using various elements, managed to incorporate this demand in his electoral campaign and raised the issue of anti-Americanism as a means of criticism of the Bush administration. The discourse on anti-Americanism contested the national narration formed during the Bush presidency and functioned as an asset in the Obama campaign. Barack Obama, with his charismatic political personality, the symbolic power of his personal story and through a personalized presidential campaign, tried to combine the revival of American idealism with moderate conservatism.

The paper explores the materials of the correspondence of Voltaire and Catherine II for examination the schemes of Enlightenment historical imagination and arguments to history used for conceptualizing and legitimation of current political events and actions during the Russian-Ottoman war of 1768 – 1774. Tropological analysis reveals, among the series of sustained historical arguments having been developed by the “patriarch of the Enlightenment” in his aspirations to persuade the Russian empress to become the “queen of the Greeks” and European countries to support Catherine in her struggle against the Ottoman Empire, an especial type of classicist imaginative schemes (schemes of “antiquising imagination”) which were emerging in the correspondence during the discussion of the Balkan issues. The paper demonstrates how in these schemes, the territories of the Northern Pontic, the Balkans and the Archipelago were imagined and described by the participants of the correspondence in terms of the language which goes back to the texts by Greek classical authors included in the circle of classicist modern European education; analyses the political functions of this language in the texts of the French philosopher and the Russian empress; describes the first outlines of the future “Byzantine idea” in Russian political imagination.
