Historical research on the origins and development of management is rare. There is a particular paucity of thorough analyses on practice and thought in the pre-scientific period of management, which has been done on the basis of written, printed and archaeological sources. Research results from archaeology, cultural anthropology, economic history, and the history of economic thought are used all too infrequently in the history of management studies. The article seeks to show, in chronological fashion from the dawn of ancient civilisations to the fall of the Roman Empire in 476, the first reflections on managerial sciences using in modern day terminology including work organisation, management, leadership, motivation, strategy, action, quality, accounting, state administration and social organisations. Practical accomplishments in realising management directives are also presented.
