This paper briefly delves into the complexities of family law in the United States, highlighting the diverse, often disparate, and even contradictory concepts rooted in varied sources. It discusses the evolution of the parentage model in the United States, with a specific focus on approaches outlined in the Uniform Parentage Act (UPA), as drafted by the Uniform Law Commission in 1973, 2002, and 2017. This examination adopts a historical perspective to analyze different types of parentage, giving special attention to voluntarily acknowledged parentage, hold-out parentage, and de facto parentage. Furthermore, the paper scrutinizes the legal terminology defined in UPA, including the adoption of gender-neutral language in family law. The article culminates by examining the potential influence of U.S. parentage concepts in European jurisdictions, particularly Poland while leaving the overarching question open-ended.
