Contemporary University PhD programs in the eyes of doctoral students – demands and resources in the context of doctoral study programs. Research report on the opinion-based survey of doctoral students at the Jagiellonian University

In the academic community within Poland, there is an ongoing debate about the optimal strategies for a redesign of PhD programs; however, the views of PhD students in relation to contemporary doctoral study programs are not widely known. Therefore, in this article, we aim to answer the following questions: (1) what are the demands and the resources for doctoral studies at the Jagiellonian University (JU) as experienced by PhD students? (2) how are these demands and resources related to study burnout and engagement? To gain answers to these questions, we conducted an on-line opinion-based survey of doctoral students. As a result, 326 JU PhD students completed a questionnaire measuring 26 demands and 23 resources along with measures of study burnout and levels of engagement. The results revealed that the demands of doctoral studies at the JU (as declared by at least half of the respondents) are: the requirement to participate in classes that are perceived as an unproductive use of time, the lack of remuneration for tutoring courses with students, a lack of information about possible career paths subsequent to graduation, the use of PhD students as low-paid workers at the university, a lack of opportunities for financing their own research projects, and an inability to take up employment while studying for a doctoral degree. In terms of resources, at least half of the doctoral students pointed to: discounts on public transport and the provision of free-of-charge access to scientific journals. Analyzing both the frequency and strength of the relationships between resources/demands and burnout/engagement, we have identified four key problem areas: a lack of support from their supervisor, role ambiguity within University structures for PhD students, the conflict between paid work and doctoral studies, and the mandatory participation in classes as a student.

Studia trzeciego stopnia to stosunkowo nowy etap zinstytucjonalizowanego kształcenia. Literatura przedmiotu dotycząca tego etapu kształcenia jest wciąż skromna. Podobnie rzecz ma się z badaniami eksplorującymi i wyjaśniającymi działalność doktorantów oraz funkcjonowanie studiów doktoranckich. W artykule dokonuję charakterystyki osobistej i profesjonalnej refleksyjności w ujęciu doktorantów, a także prezentuję ich opinie na temat studiów doktoranckich jako przestrzeni refleksyjności.

PhD studies is a relatively new stage of institutionalized education. Literature concering this stage of education is still inconspicuous. The same applies to research activities which explore and explain the functioning of PhD students and PhD studies. In this article i make a personal and professional characteristics of reflction in terms of PhD students, as well as present their views on PhD studies as an area of reflction.

The article discusses the non-adjustment of the statutory limit relating to doctoral students, which sets out the right to a survivor’s pension. First some general information on the benefits, with particular emphasis on the periodic nature of the benefit, is presented on the basis of selected decisions of the Supreme Court. This is followed by some examples of statutory regulations that equalise as well as differentiate the rights and obligations of doctoral students with those of other students. These findings are subsequently compared with the existing constitutional norms. A special emphasis has been placed on the principle of equality before the law and the right to social assistance from the State in this particular case. References have been made to the doctrine and the previous judicial decisions of the Constitutional Tribunal. In the final  summary, some legislative amendments are proposed.

Artykuł porusza pomijaną w dotychczasowym piśmiennictwie kwestię niedostosowania ustawowej granicy wyznaczającej prawo do renty rodzinnej w stosunku do uczestników studiów trzeciego stopnia (doktorantów). Inicjalnie przedstawiono podstawowe informacje dotyczące renty rodzinnej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem okresowego charakteru tego świadczenia, uwzględniając przy tym orzecznictwo Sądu Najwyższego. Następnie zaprezentowano wybrane przykłady ustawowych regulacji zrównujących w prawach i obowiązkach doktorantów ze studentami, jak również tych różnicujących status doktorantów. W dalszej kolejności dokonano kompilacji wcześniejszych tez, zestawiając je z unormowaniami konstytucyjnymi. Szczególny nacisk położono na wyrażoną w ustawie zasadniczej zasadę równości wobec prawa oraz prawa do pomocy socjalnej ze strony państwa, ergo tych regulacji szczególnie rzutujących na omawiany problem. Odwołano się przy tym do dotychczasowego dorobku doktryny oraz orzecznictwa Trybunału Konstytucyjnego. W podsumowaniu zasugerowano zmiany legislacyjne mające za zadanie eliminację zaobserwowanych zastrzeżeń względem Konstytucji RP.

Background. The aim of the study was to provide information about the socio-economic status, research activity, and mood disorders among PhD students of the Academy of Physical Education in Wrocław, Poland. Material and methods. This study covered 61 PhD students (mean age 28.4 years). The research employed the diagnostic survey method. The author’s survey examined the employment status and economic situation. An additional method, used to assess depression symptoms, was Beck Depression Inventory. Results. In the fields of physiotherapy and physical education, 96% and 78% of PhD students, respectively, had found employment. The total of 72% of physical education and 50% of physiotherapy students had published at least once. As many as 30% of all respondents reported symptoms of mood disorders and complained about mental health problems. Conclusions. Mood disorders are a serious problem in PhD students of the Academy of Physical Education in Wrocław. While physical education students show greater activity in the field of scientific research, more physiotherapy students are professionally active.

The article is an attempt to capture the changes taking place in the “essential system” of the Master/scientific supervisor. Higher education reforms introduced in Poland in the last fifteen years have contributed to the reconstruction of this role. Before our very eyes, there is a change not only in the institution, but in the whole social/professional group dealing with science and higher education. The statement referred to in the title is the modality of this process, the result of reflections made by students, an attempt to put their lives into new realities. Sensitizing categories, in the hermeneutic attempt to understand the changes taking place, are the “professional role” and “any” related to the role of the Master who is weakly present in the scientific and journalistic discourses. I ask questions about the reasons for and consequences of the processes taking place, and in trying to understand them, I refer to statutory regulations and theoretical inspirations.

Artykuł jest próbą uchwycenia przemian zachodzących w „systemie istotnościowym” Mistrza/opiekuna naukowego. Reformy szkolnictwa wyższego, wprowadzane w Polsce w ostatnich piętnastu latach, przyczyniają się do rekonstrukcji tej roli. Na naszych oczach dokonuje się zmiana nie tylko instytucji, ale całej grupy społecznej/zawodowej zajmującej się nauką i edukacją wyższą. Przywołana w tytule wypowiedź jest modalnością tego procesu, wynikiem poczynionej przez akademików refleksji, próbą ułożenia swojego życia w nowych realiach. Kategoriami uczulającymi w hermeneutycznej próbie zrozumienia zachodzących przemian są „rola zawodowa” oraz „jakikolwiek” odniesione do słabo obecnej w dyskursach naukowych i publicystycznych roli Mistrza. Stawiam pytania o powody i konsekwencje zachodzących procesów, a próbując je zrozumieć, odnoszę się do regulacji ustawowych oraz teoretycznych inspiracji.
