This paper addresses the issue of relations between the conviction of being involved in the municipality affairs and interpersonal trust as well as evaluation of local authorities in terms of their attitude towards social activity of inhabitants. This problem was presented on the example of PodkowaLeśna – municipality in Warsaw agglomeration. Getting involved in the social life of the municipality, regardless of form, builds interpersonal trust, which strengthens social capital, so important for the residents to initiate cooperation for the public good. The author of the paper shows that a sense of involvement in the affairs of the municipality does not necessarily result from the membership in the local organizations, a several of which operate in Podkowa Leśna. What's interesting, activities outside of formal volunteering and sometimes even the attitude of willingness to cooperate seem to be more important in case of interpersonal trust. Trust in the local authorities, in turn, is strongly influenced by the actions taken by themselves and to a lesser extent by the social activity of the inhabitants. Podkowa Leśnais an example of a city whose authorities favor the social activity of its inhabitants, bringing a significant contribution to the social capital of the municipality. Local authorities aware of their role in building local community responsible for the common good and residents involved in public affairs is a prerequisite for improving the quality of life in every municipality.

Ebenezer Howard’s book Garden Cities of To-Morrow is not only a treatise on urban planning or a modern utopia, but also a rhetorical case, using carefully built argumentation scheme. The aim of this article is to show how Howard’s ideas are presented and supported, and how his whole work is centered around the romantic notion that “extremes meet”. Both Howard and Polish interpreters of his ideas presented garden cities as a remedy for urgent problems (Lloyd F. Bitzer’s “exigence”). Their opinions on what exactly these problems are were, however, different. For Howard the most important aim was to draw people back to the country and provide them with cheaper, more comfortable houses. For Władysław Dobrzyński, the chief propagator of garden cities in Poland, the main problem were health conditions in Warsaw. The city is presented as ultimate evil, so the “marriage” between the country and the town is not possible and in fact not desired. Thus, Polish journalists and activists who tried to make Howard’s idea attractive to popular public, reversed his course of reasoning. In their visions extremes not only do not meet, but are radically separated. The city and the country, work and free time, gardens and industry are polar opposites. They can be reconciled not in actual, physical space, but only by leading a “double life”, shared between working in a city and living in an idyllic country refuge.

In 2016 the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Research Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Zakład Archeologii Śródziemnomorskiej Polskiej Akademii Nauk) and 50th anniversary of the edition of the first volume of Études et Travaux took place. It is an opportunity to recall the story of the institution founded on the initiative of Prof. Kazimierz Michałowski, one of three key components constituting the ‘Polish school of Mediterranean archaeology’. The Centre’s scholars have participated in many archaeological missions conducted under the auspices of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw. They carried out scientific projects connected with explored sites, but also various studies undertaken independently of the fieldwork. In addition to scientific research, scholarly editions, the lasting traces of their activity are popular scientific publications. In 2010, the Centre was combined with the Centre for Studies on Non-European Countries of the Polish Academy of Sciences and was thus transformed into the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Kultur Śródziemnomorskich i Orientalnych Polskiej Akademii Nauk).
