The author discusses the relationship between the idea of postmodernism and the idea of Sacrum in contemporary architecture through a theory conceived by Władysław Stróżewski. Th e architecture of most Polish churches which were built during the last decades can be classif ied as postmodern. The question that arises is whether or not it is possible to experience religious sacredness under this type of architecture. Th e author presents information concerning the essence of sacred architecture and an outline of postmodern philosophy. In the third part she analyses three Polish churches, which can be described as postmodern. Th e author makes an attempt to answer the question of whether this architecture fulf ills its main function (experiencing sacredness in a postmodern setting). In conclusion, the author makes a connection between contemporary facets in f ine arts and architecture and its involvement in religious architecture.

The article attempts to look at the history of Polish churches that were established in Left-Bank Ukraine in the 19th century, through their tragic history in the 20th century and the current threat of destruction by Russian rocket fire during the ongoing war started in 2022. The study presents brief sketches of the history of each of the 12 churches built on the territory of Left-Bank Ukraine in the Yekaterinoslav, Poltava, Kharkiv and Chernihiv governorates. Owing to the efforts of local Poles, 12 churches were built in this area, namely in: Chernihiv, Nizhyn, Poltava, Romny, Kremenchuk, Yekaterinoslav (Dnipro), Kamianske, Yenakiieve, Mariupol, Bakhmut, Kharkiv and Sumy. The tables included in this publication allow to better show the chronology of the establishment of Polish churches in the area and to present their dramatic fate in a synthetic form. It is worth mentioning that the temples, which are relics of sacred architecture that adorn the central parts of Ukrainian cities, remain vibrant centres of religious and cultural life despite the ongoing war.

Dzięki staraniom miejscowych Polaków zbudowano 12 kościołów w: Czernihowie, Nieżynie, Połtawie, Romnach, Krzemieńczuku, Jekaterynosławiu (Dnieprze), Kamieńskiem, Jenakijewem, Mariupolu, Bachmucie, Charkowie i Sumach.
