The aim of this paper is to discuss and answer for the first time the question of the earliest Polish presence at the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem. As an outcome of archival research carried out at St. Stephan’s Convent in Jerusalem following conclusions can be drawn. First of all, the attendance of Poles at the École biblique dates back to the very beginning of the school. As early as in 1892 that is only two years after its first commencement a Polish priest from the Archdiocese of Warsaw, Rev. Adolf Józef Bożeniec Jełowicki started his biblical studies there. He had an occasion to meet in person the founder of the school and the famous professor Fr. Marie-Joseph Lagrange. Rev. Jełowicki was also a witness to the creation of the important periodical “Revue Biblique”. Lectures at that time were few, and in the process of studying, the emphasis was put not only on theoretical knowledge, but also on discovering the Holy Land through practical classes in archeology and topography. Lastly, the stay of Rev. Jełowicki at the École biblique was only one year long nevertheless it resulted in the publication of a professional guide to Jerusalem and its surroundings, as well as several dozen encyclopedic entries on biblical topics. However, after returning to the homeland, Jełowicki could not pursue an academic career path, but the lessons learned at the École biblique became his important asset to future pastoral challenges as a rector in Warsaw, and then as an auxiliary bishop in Lublin.

Saint Apostles Peter and Paul Parish in Spring Valley, IL, was founded on September 30, 1891, and the newly built wooden church was dedicated on August 14, 1892. At first, nearly 200 Polish and Lithuanian families belonged to this parish. After a few years, however, the Lithuanians built their own church. In 1901, Poles constructed a school for children and a rectory for the parish priest. The first temple was completely estroyed by fire on December 17, 1906. Nevertheless, rectory and school survived. Throughout the year, services were held in a private building. The construction of a new brick church began in 1908. The founding priest, Fr. Hieronim W. Błażyński, suffering from illness, died the same year. As of March 13, 1909, the construction was led by Fr. Józef Cieśla. Shortly after, he was able to complete the construction and equip the church with altars, decorate it with stained glass windows and fill it with pews for five hundred people. The dedication of the new church took place on June 29, 1909. The parish had a school, where almost 200 children were taught by the Franciscan Sisters. The church was consecrated on May 31, 1920. Back then, the following priests served in the parish: Sikorski, Wałajtys, Łopatta, Tonello, Mączyński, Balcewicz. The first parish priest, since 1894, was Fr. Julian Papoń. Later on, in 1897, he was replaced by Fr. Michał Peża. Pastors who succeeded him were: Fr. Antoni Drewnicki, since 1900; Fr. Marcin Piechota, since 1903; Fr. Hieronim W. Błażyński, since 1908; and Fr. Józef Cieśla, since 1909.

Parafia Świętych Apostołów Piotra i Pawła w Spring Valley, Ill., została założona 30 września 1891 r., a nowo wybudowany drewniany kościół został poświęcony 14 sierpnia 1892 r. Na początku do tej parafii należało około 200 rodzin Polaków i Litwinów. Po kilku latach Litwini wznieśli własny kościół. W 1901 r. Polacy wybudowali szkołę i plebanię. 17 grudnia 1906 r. pożar doszczętnie zniszczył świątynię. Ocalała plebania i szkoła. Przez rok nabożeństwa odprawiano w prywatnym budynku. Budowę nowego murowanego kościoła rozpoczęto w 1908 r., jego budowniczy, ks. Hieronim W. Błażyński złożony chorobą zmarł tego samego roku. Od 13 marca 1909 r. budowę kontynuował ks. Józef Cieśla. W krótkim czasie zdołał świątynię dokończyć i wyposażyć ołtarzami, ozdobić witrażami i zapełnić ławkami na pięćset miejsc. Poświęcenie nowego kościoła odbyło się 29 czerwca 1909 r. Przy parafii prowadzona była szkoła, w której blisko 200 dzieci uczyły siostry franciszkanki. Konsekracja kościoła miała miejsce 31 maja 1920 r. W tym okresie w parafii pracowali księża: Sikorski, Wałajtys, Łopata, Tonello, Mączyński i Balcewicz. Pierwszym proboszczem, od roku 1894 był ks. Julian Papoń, następnie od 1897 r. – ks. Michał Peża, od 1900 r. – ks. Antoni Drewnicki, od 1903 r. – ks. Marcin Piechota, od 1908 r. – ks. Hieronim Błażyński i od 1909 r. – ks. Józef Cieśla.

Warsaw Archbishop Vincent Teofil Chosciak-Popiel left numerous traces of contact with the reading in the correspondence from the years 1846–1853 and in the memoirs published for the period from 1862 to 1875. That is, until taking the bishopric of the Kujawy and Kalisz. Also the notary act of Julian Samkowski preserved inventory of bishop’s private library, which included 2198 works in 4170 volumes and it was written at the time of sale of the library in 1880 to Konstanty Popiel. Multifaceted material will be used to analyze personal commitment to book of this significant person in the 19th and early 20th century.

Arcybiskup warszawski Wincenty Teofil Chościak-Popiel pozostawił liczne ślady zainteresowania książką w korespondencji z lat 1846–1853 oraz w pamiętnikach opublikowanych za okres od 1862 do 1875 r., czyli do momentu objęcia biskupstwa kujawsko-kaliskiego (1876–1883). W aktach notariusza włocławskiego Juliana Samkowskiego zachował się inwentarz księgozbioru prywatnego biskupa, który obejmował 2198 dzieł w 4170 woluminach i został spisany przed sprzedażą biblioteki w 1880 r. Konstantemu Popielowi. Wieloaspektowy materiał źródłowy posłuży do przeanalizowania osobistego zaangażowania w sprawy książki znaczącej postaci XIX i początków XX w.

70 years after the end of the World War II, we can say that despite vast research of the matter at hand, there are still many of the aspects of the Nazi occupation of Europe that have evaded investigation so far. One such issue is the Nazi system of terror and extermination affecting Polish clergy, which relied − among other things − on the system of prisons and the so-called transit camps (usually located in specially dedicated monasteries). The testimonies of the clergymen who suffered the ordeal caused by the Nazi persecutions are an important historiographical resource, supplementing the incomplete historical material. Relying on such memoirs, the article approaches a vast panorama of issues related to the internment procedure that the clergy underwent: arrest, strip search, stay, daily agenda, food, living conditions, punishment, persecutions, work and religious life.

Upływ prawie 70 lat od zakończenia II wojny światowej pozwala stwierdzić, iż mimo przeprowadzenia gruntownych badań nad okupacją hitlerowską nadal w historii tego okresu pozostają obszary niezbadane. Wymownym tego przykładem jest system terroru i eksterminacji przeprowadzony na duchownych polskich, którego częścią składową były więzienia i tzw. obozy przejściowe (mieszczące się zazwyczaj w zaadaptowanych do tego celu klasztorach). Bogatym i cennym źródłem uzupełniającym dotychczasowe nieścisłości są wspomnienia kapłanów-ofiar tej przerażającej machiny. Opierając się na literaturze pamiętnikarskiej, artykuł porusza zagadnienia związane z internowaniem kapłanów w aresztach − począwszy od momentu ich osadzenia (rewizja osobista), poprzez pobyt (harmonogram dnia, wyżywienie, warunki bytowe, kary i represje oraz oprawcy, praca), kończąc na życiu religijnym.
