Recently, an ideology and ethos of the so-called ‘man of success’ has been increasingly questioned. Fortunately, the common sense slowly returns, and with it the reminder that not always ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’, and that a man can be ‘an architect of his own fortune’ only when in creating the future he is not hindered by forces more powerful than himself. Adam Sadowski, an alumnus of Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów (Lviv) and a promising criminal lawyer, learned about it the hard way. This man always dreamt of a university career and had the excellent makings of an outstanding scientist. However, the capricious fate was not going to negotiate with him. Although he had a chance to get a position at a university and, after many adventures, he even managed to defend his doctorate, he never became a professor.
