This article is devoted to the efforts of Polish missionaries in Japan in the 20th and 21st centuries and to their role in evangelization and in the social life of the Japanese people. It also tackles the question of ministry amongst the Polish diaspora, which is a very important factor in strengthening the ties between Polish compatriots in foreign lands as well as in helping to maintain traditions and customs. The basis for this research on the subject is data collected from individual orders and congregations, the recollections of missionaries and their written compilations along with conversations with missionaries conducted by the author.

The article presents the work of Polish missionaries in Papua New Guinea. The author pays special attention to the first Polish Fidei donum missionaries, who originally came from the archdiocese of Gniezno - fathers: Zbigniew Hanelt, Andrzej Grzela and Kazimierz Muszyński. After them came the second "wave" of Polish Fidei donum priests: Henryk Micek, Paweł Czerwiński and Marian Zalewski. Later, the others fallowed. Papua New Guinea is one of the special places where we can see the missionary work of Polish Fidei donum priests from different dioceses.

The Polish SVD missionaries’ contribution to the evangelization of the Lesser Sunda Islands can be followed on the basis of letters written by them between 1965-2000 to the Polish periodicals: “Verbinum” and “Misjonarz”. The said correspondence shows that the missionaries took up various challenges encountered in their then-current pastoral work: they taught catechizes and celebrated the sacraments, proclaimed the Gospel including the use of mass media (parish bulletins, films, radio broadcasts). Their activities contributed to the integral improvement of the living standard of their parishioners. Particularly noteworthy is the missionaries’ contribution to broadly understood education: they founded Catholic primary schools, minor and major seminaries as well as institutes for lay people. The pastoral work of missionaries proceeded in a spirit of dialogue with the religions and cultures of evangelized peoples of the Lesser Sunda Islands. From the Polish missionaries in Indonesia one can learn how to wisely proclaim the Gospel, taking into consideration inculturation of the Word in non-Christian cultures.

During his pilgrimages to his homeland, John Paul II was teaching his countrymen about the problems specifi c to the Church in Poland, but also to the whole Church. One of these themes was the missions ad gentes. The Pope noticed and pointed out on the example of the history of his nation that missions built Polish statehood and shaped Polish culture. He called for this process to be recognized in the history of Europe as a whole and to recognize in evangelization the factor that builds and defi nes its true identity. He showed that missions help imbue human culture with a supernatural element. He recalled the truth about the missionary nature of the Church and the missionary vocation of all its members. Responsibility and cooperation in the missionary work was for John Paul II one of the forms of the “imagination of mercy.”  Appealing to his countrymen for missionary generosity and commitment, he also pointed to the fi gures who were involved in the animation of the missionary work in the Polish and universal Church. In his teaching in Poland, he recalled the missionary task of the Church community and of each and every faithful.
