W pierwszej połowie sierpnia 1920 r. ziemie północno-wschodniego Mazowsze były miejscem zaciętych walk odwrotowych. Zahamowały one impet ofensywy wojsk sowieckiego Frontu Zachodniego Michaiła Tuchaczewskiego, dając czas Naczelnemu Wodzowi Józefowi Piłsudskiemu na przegrupowanie oddziałów Wojska Polskiego przed bitwą decydującą o dalszym istnieniu lub upadku odrodzonego państwa polskiego. W ostatniej fazie Bitwy Warszawskiej na północno-wschodnim Mazowszu doszło do rozbicia większości oddziałów Armii Czerwonej. Niniejszy artykuł charakteryzuje także stanowisko poszczególnych warstw miejscowego społeczeństwa wobec bolszewickiego zagrożenia, jego postawy podczas krótkotrwałej, ale tragicznej w skutkach bolszewickiej okupacji. Sygnalizuje też postawy antypaństwowe niewielkiej części społeczeństwa omawianego regionu, współpracującej z wkraczającymi oddziałami Armii Czerwonej.

In the first half of August 1920, the territories of north-eastern Mazovia were the site of fierce retreat fighting. They inhibited the impetus of the offensive of the troops of the Soviet Western Front by Mikhail Tukhachevski, giving the Commander- in-Chief Józef Piłsudski time to regroup the troops of the Polish Army before the battle that determined the further existence or collapse of the reborn Polish state. In the last phase of the Battle of Warsaw in north-eastern Mazovia, most of the Red Army units were broken up. This article also describes the position of individual layers of local society towards the Bolshevik threat, its attitude during the short-lived, but tragic consequences of the Bolshevik occupation. It also signals the anti-state attitudes of a small part of the population of the region in question, cooperating with the invading Red Army troops.
