In this study, the author addresses the issue of Bonaventure’s position on the question of the primary purpose of the incarnation. He presents a translation of certain passages from Bonaventure’s Commentary on the Sentences. He subsequently he analyzes the content of the translated texts in an extensive conclusion, confronts them with other parts of Bonaventure’s work, and compares them with the position of John Duns Scotus. This demonstrates that Bonaventure’s attitude was not clearcut and changed throughout his life. Scotus could have found a starting point for creating his original solution to the given problem in some of Bonaventure’s statements.
