This paper examines the role of the advent of printing in explaining financial integration in Central Europe until 1520. It finds that printing promoted financial integration because it triggered a fall in the costs of transmitting information, assisted the functioning of the Holy Roman Empire in major centres and significantly increased the financial importance of human capital.

The article presents results of a bibliometric analysis of the scientific output made by researchers from Institute of Information Science and Book Studies at Nicolas Copernicus University in Torun during 1976–2007. The research material includes set of 873 items, especially: books and their editions, articles published in journals and collective works, literature reviews, interviews and translations. Authors of this article make a quantitative analysis of the material, take into account dynamic of publications' growth, organizational and employment status of Institute, during the 32-year period of its activity.

The article describes research series entitled 'Acta Universitatis Lodziesis. Folia Librorum' edited in 1989-2009. Its predecessors were 'Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Seria I, Nauki Humanistyczno-Spoleczne' (1975-1980) and 'Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Scientiarum Artium et Librorum' (1981-1987). The author presents the editorial staff, co-workers, publishing features and subject areas covered by 'Folia Librorum' between 1989 and 2009. The periodical is published once or twice a year. Currently the editor in chief is Jadwiga Konieczna and editor's secretary is Evelina Kristanova. Article contributors are mainly researchers, academics, librarians and bibliophiles. The articles are divided into three sections: books, press and libraries. There were some monographic works too: doctoral theses and professor works of the Chair of the Library and Information Science staff at the University of Lodz. In the latest volume 15 of 2009 articles covered also contemporary library, bibliology and press-related problems. From 2006 'Folia Librorum' has had its own website with fulltext version.

The aim of the study is to present and specify the possibilities of quantitative corpus analysis of verse, which was characteristic for the work of the representatives of the avant-garde movement of Nadrealism – the Slovak variation of Surrealism (Rudolf Fabry, Július Lenko, Vladimír Reisel, Štefan Žáry, and others). The article consists of three chapters. The first one summarises the previous research on the versological aspects of Nadrealism and characterises their general features. Then, isolated attempts at quantitative analysis of the verse are presented and critically evaluated. The conclusion presents the possibilities of quantitative research of this type of verse in digital processing, with the need to create a digital corpus of poetic texts that could be used for the analysis of a variety of versological problems. The aim should be not only the digitisation of Nadrealist texts, but also of the whole complex of Slovak poetry, so that selected problems can be studied in their interrelations and also from developmental aspects. From the methodological point of view, the study follows the current research in the field of quantitative versology.

The text is focused on proper names and their historical semantics as illustrated by the journalistic texts collected in the Czech National Corpus (Totalita – corpora of written texts of the Communist era, SYN – synchronic written corpora). Our research showed proper names can be regarded as key words typical for a text created in a particular period. The problem of place names as proper names with mostly orientative function or proper names with primarily symbolic value are researched with their collocations via t-score method (a quantitative test). The place names are presenting themselves as mostly orientation and localization language elements. Their figuratively usage as metaphor and metonymy is appearing rarely; however, this is typical of place names with an ideologically and contemporary important value only.

We investigate the developments of output volatility and competitiveness during the recent global recession using a unique firm-level database. The database combines Slovak balance sheet and trade data with results of a qualitative questionnaire survey on the firm competitiveness. The results of our quantitative analysis show that younger, less export oriented and more productive firms with comparative advantage weathered the crisis better. In addition, we find that highly efficient leadership, professional management and strong orientation on cost reduction helped firms to recover from the crisis and reach higher than the pre-crisis level of competitiveness within a short time period since the outset of the crisis.

Deepening globalization of the world economy characterized by a growing volume of cross-border transactions of goods, services and capital, initiates an objective need for liberalization of international trade. Formation of preferential trading agreement, such as free trade agreements (FTAs), brings urgent need to assess and quantifies the effects of FTAs by General Equilibrium Model (CGE). CGE model was used to assess the effects of the upcoming Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between EU and Canada. The quantitative analysis estimates the potential economic effects of the full removal of tariffs on bilateral trade in goods, a partial reduction of the cost of non-tariff barriers on trade in goods, and a partial liberalization of bilateral trade in services. Canada and the EU launched negotiations for CETA in 2009, and have a target date of early 2012 for completing them.

Moomintroll stories by Tove Jansson were brought to Poland by Wojciech Zukrowski. Their publisher - the same for almost 50 years - is 'Nasza Ksiegarnia'. First book translated into Polish from this fairy-tale series (Finn Family Moomintroll) was published in 1964. It is worth mentioning that individual volumes were published in our country in a different order than the order created by the author and more to that, many years after the date of their first edition. Popularity of these books is well demonstrated by the number of reprints and adaptations - all with accompanying lively response from literary critics. The article discusses such issues connected to the presence of T. Jansson's Moomins series on the Polish publishing market as: editions, translations, graphic design, continuations, adaptations for film and stage. Opinions of literary critics on these works were also analysed.
