The article focuses on determining how Czech's stereotypical features are present in public discourse on the internet pages of selected broadcasting radio stations. Analysis of the material has been preceded by an attempt of reconstructing the basic stereotype of the Czech which functions in the consciousness of the Poles. The basis for this part of the study are dictionary sources, sociological works, as well as ethnoliguistic. 36 internet articles published in 2013 have been analysed from the linguistic point of view. All of them have been published on the websites of four radio stations broadcasting in the area of Higher Silesia: Radio Opole, Radio Bielsko, Antyradio and Radio Aniol Beskidow.

The author was of the assumption that the activities of the electronic media (radio broadcasting and television) constitute one of the most significant aspects of polish culture, economy and medial system. Cognizance was also taken of the fact that the importance and role of the polish electronic media do not differ, to a great extent, from what obtains in the other European countries. The distinctive feature of the polish medial system, however, is the absence of an up to date law on radio broadcasting and television. There is lack of a regulating law in Poland which would not only have outlined the key aspects necessary for the functioning of these media but would have anticipated them as well. The author came to the conclusion that the current mandatory law on radio broadcasting and television is an incoherent and obsolete legal act. At the same time it became one of the basic instruments for the runninig of the public media. A great number of amendments were only designed to address short-term political issues. The attention of the decision makers was focused on personal matters. Politicians were not interested in substantative changes in law modernization and this was due only to the implementation of the European law which came into effect after a considerable delay.

The fiftieth death anniversary of Czesław Straszewicz (1904-1963) makes a perfect opportunity to present the writers archival epistolary legacy from the emigration period, so far unpublished. The addressee of most of the writer’s letters is Jan Nowak-Jeziorański, the director of the Polish Section of Radio Free Europe as well as a few other workers of this radio station. This body of letters is complemented by letters of the writer’s wife, Ewa Roman-Straszewicz to Tadeusz Zawadzki and Nowak-Jeziorański, written after the death of the author of Turyści z bocianich gniazd [Tourists from stork nests].

The digitization process alters the media landscapes in all developed European countries. This study presents the results of research that was conducted on the sample of active websites of all radio stations based in Croatia. All active websites (n=157) were mapped on the basis of a matrix that included news, communication, and advertising content as well as indicators of media convergence. The results show a marked unevenness in terms of individual websites’ offer, especially in the category of news content. What all sites have in common is a strong reliance on programmes previously broadcast. Reasons for this neglect are lack of money and lack of staff trained to work in a digital environment. Websites are not understood as a step towards a converged media environment, nor is there a clear awareness of their role in the strategic development of the medium of radio in the 21st century.

The paper analyses the question of tabloidization in relation to the radio broadcast. It indicates some typical phenomena of that process which occur in radio, and on the other hand it stresses its certain properties, which allow radio to avoid some of the aspects which are typical for tabloid media. The author considers some essential features of radio communication due to which it may become, though not entirely free from the negative influence of infotainmet, but still a medium more “noble” and more audience-friendly than television or internet. Apparent weakness of radio — the lack of picture — in this case may become a powerful antidote against ‘dumbing down’ of the tabloid-style visual culture. Radio has a great potential in performing integrational, indexing and informing functions, which added to proper broadcasting offer (or format) may result in a station which is both frequently listened to and non-tenuous, non-tabloid.

This study analyses the field of Slovak documentary films for cinemas based on ten interviews conducted with producers in 2018 and 2019. It offers a classification of producers based on their primary focus and tries to explain the motivations of the directors to produce their own documentaries and the fact that they later give up this aim and shift to the production of the movies directed by their colleagues. The study also includes an analysis of the producers’ attitudes towards the two most influential institutions in the field: the Slovak Audio-visual Fund and the Radio and Television of Slovakia. Finally, the author presents a model of the field and the trajectories of the producers from their entry into the field: gaining and consolidating their position with greater autonomy, taking up positions in institutions that are most relevant for the field, remaining in marginal positions, and choosing less standard tactics.

In August 2010 there elapsed 84 years from a successful start of regular radio broadcasting in Slovakia, under the brand 'Radiojournal'. In the process of cultural-historical development in our country, the Slovak Radio has established itself as a representative of the unique cultural and artistic values in the line of mass media communication to overcome the complex evolution, whereas it has lost no importance not even under the influence of competing forms of mass media (modern press, television and Internet). Its fruitful history started with its foundation as a part of the Czechoslovak Society Radiojournal, later continued as an institution of the independent Slovak State in World War II, and then in the socialist Czechoslovakia too, and finally it established itself as a considerable public-service institution after 1990. At present, since January 2011 it has been operating and broadcasting in a merged public-service institution RTVS in a common body with the Slovak Television. The Slovak Radio in a line of its forerunners has gradually created conditions for the nationwide providing of audio-acoustic services for public in the sphere of radio broadcasting in the sense of a national, independent, informational, cultural and educational institution. Influence of the Slovak Radio, which contributed to the cultural and civilization development, may be in this connection understood as a specific cultural phenomenon in the sense of emancipation anchor attaching of the radio in the culture as expression of cultural reference to life. During more than eighty years of its existence, the mission of the oldest Slovak electronic medium was changed and amended, particularly by broadening its technical capabilities and programme forms. In its broadcasting, it systemically and comprehensively surveys the cultural events in its entire scope, where the expressive potential of high quality music and a literary word of sound-modulated communication have its irrecoverable position. A significant phenomenon of the Slovak Radio as a part of the current culture during its historical development has penetrated very intensively into the society, and even now it affects all spheres of social life, and opens the fundamental question of synchronizing them with the cultural past and national specificities in the context of moral and ethical responsibility and also high value criteria. The historical development of broadcasting has created supporting pillars for a balanced cultural tradition of public service in national and European level. In terms of cultural and historical significance the Slovak Radio played a dominant role with music and dramatic ensembles, but not only as disseminators of culture, but also as significant components of increase of audience. Culture and art keep their positions in radio communications just through SR broadcasting. During eighty years of its existence, the public-service Slovak Radio built a gradual transformation of its own wide-ranging backstage and creative broadcasting centres, whether dramatic ensembles or musical groups, in a course of program content production systematically implementing various genres and forms of broadcasting. Influence of the Slovak Radio contributed to the cultural and civilization development and in this context it can be understood as a specific cultural phenomenon firmly integrated into a cultural competence for life. High-quality and successful program structure of the Slovak Radio stays on the use of long-term programming experience of Slovak radio-broadcasting and on the tradition of the predecessors and is destined to balanced offer of programs in relation to majority and minority groups of listeners. Reaching and acquiring the young population is one of the latest trends in the public-service Slovak Radio practice. Importance of the Slovak Radio for its listeners is its value orientation for culture and education above all regarding a commercial offer at dual radio market in Slovakia. At the Slovak market, the Slovak Radio maintains a distinct cultural-mediation position as a broad area for the time-tested quality of the broadcasting.
