Rural areas constitute a valuable environment and offer proper conditions for the development of tourism. The intensifying tendency towards tourist trips to rural areas with attractive natural environment can be linked to the popularization of the idea of sustainable development and, consequently, to the growing pro-environmental awareness of the world's communities. The rural recreational space and its landscape attractiveness exert a strong influence on the development of agri-tourism. The authoresses of the article attempt to identify the attractive features of the landscape of the Wielkopolska region and to classify and assess the types of rural areas existing in Wielkopolska from the point of view of opportunities they offer for the development of tourism. The research covered the qualities of the landscape of the Wielkopolska region, analysed in accordance with its division into 31 administrative districts (poviats), and took into account some measurable factors: legally protected areas of especially great natural value (shown as a percent of the total area), the share of woodland (in the total area), the share of lakes, (in the total area), the share of meadows and pasture-land in the total area of arable land (in %), the number of monuments of nature per 1 square km. The following methods were used to conduct the research: multidimensional grouping in accordance with Ward's method, valorisation of groups with the help of a synthetic measure and linear regression of numerous variables. The conducted analyses have indicated that the northern parts of the Wielkopolska region have a larger potential for the development of tourism than its other parts. On the other hand, factors decisive for the number of farms engaging in agri-tourism are: the proportion of lakes, the proportion of forests and the number of monuments of nature per 1 square km..

Additionally, it considers the publications on cultural tourism which include references to tourism in rural areas. The research material consists mainly of four book which have the word 'agritourism' in their titles: Plichta i Sosnowski [2006], Marketing in agritourism; Sznajder i Przezbórskia [2006], Agritourism; Ciepiela i Sosnowski [2007], Agritourism - fashion or need?; Sawicki i Mazurek-Kusiak [2010], Agritourism in theory and practice. Moreover, five more books were taken into consideration which, because of the title, of the cover picture, or mainly because of their contents point at agrotourism or rural tourism. The predominant method is the analysis of the writings' contents. Additionally, the author assesses the percentage share of the elements devoted to cultural values and cultural tourism in the works on rural and agrotourism. In the article development's directions of rural tourism and the role of national authorities in activating tourism in rural areas were presented in connection with Poland's developmental plans. The analysis' results indicate that activities in the field of rural tourism, present in developmental plans, have not the systemic character and are neither coherent nor complementing each other. Moreover, in majority of cases they do not cover the rural tourism in Poland, with exception of plans of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Developmenty. It appears that rural tourism is viewed in light od problems to be solved in rural areas and not in connection with general strategy of tourism in the country. Such approach is also reflected in the programs of institutional support which, being too general in character, do not guarantee the support for tourist enterprises in the rural areas.
