The aim of the article is to depict the material and creative background of funerary art in the Baroque era. It presents the circumstances of the origins of some of the works written after the death of Krzysztof Radziwiłł Piorun and his son, Janusz, which were commissioned by the family of the deceased. The memory of the Voivode of Vilnius Voivodeship was honoured in 1604 by lecturers from Leipzig and Basel, including, among others, the author of the funeral speech, Mateusz Dresserus. From the correspondence, it emerges that he was provided with the materials necessary to draw it up by the Radziwiłłs’ servant, Salomon Rysiński. It was also Rysiński who was asked for assistance by Caspar Dornau, an academic from Brzeg, who was listing the information he needed in order to write a funerary panegyric for Janusz Radziwiłł. Rysiński pointed to other potential creators of occasional texts, mainly the clients of the Biržai court. Foreign authors were remunerated for their funerary panegyrics, whereas the court poets could expect a bequest or an annual payment for their service.

The article evaluates a two-volume source edition of Janusz Radziwiłł’s military correspondence. The type of documentation called ‘chancellery diary’ has been characterised in more detail, presenting the research possibilities resulting from it. The hetman, personally involved in warfare, ran a chancellery in a way developed by travelling magnates. For this purpose, a diary was kept with all incoming and outgoing letters written down. It was shown that a similar method was used for the documentation created in the milieu of his father Krzysztof and his fraternal first cousin Bogusław. Arguments are presented for the ongoing writing up of the records and the technical and organisational activities related to running a chancellery in this way.

Celem artykułu jest ocena dwutomowej edycji źródłowej dotyczącej korespondencji wojskowej Janusza Radziwiłła. Szerzej scharakteryzowano typ dokumentacji nazwany „diariuszem kancelaryjnym”, ukazując wynikające z niego możliwości badawcze. Zaakcentowano, że hetman osobiście zaangażowany w działania wojenne zastosował wypracowany przez podróżujących magnatów sposób prowadzenia kancelarii. W tym celu spisywano diariusz, do którego dopisywano wszystkie listy wychodzące i przychodzące. Ukazano, że analogiczną formę ma dokumentacja powstała w otoczeniu jego ojca Krzysztof oraz brata stryjecznego Bogusława. Przedstawiono argumenty mówiące o bieżącym sporządzaniu diariusza i techniczno-organizacyjnych działaniach związanych z prowadzeniem tak działającej kancelarii.
