Recenzja książki „<<Świat był przemoczoną pustką>>. Czarny kryminał Raymonda Chandlera w literaturze i filmie” (2015) pióra Patrycji Włodek – publikacji poświęconej twórczości jednego z najwybitniejszych twórców kryminałów Raymonda Chandlera, a jednocześnie będącej próbą rehabilitacji prozy często pochopnie uważanej za popularną lub wręcz pozbawioną wartości artystycznych. Włodek sprawnie udowadnia, że Marlowe oraz świat, w którym żyje i rozwiązuje tajemnice kolejnych morderstw, to nie tylko fikcja literacka służąca rozrywce, lecz również lustrzane odbicie egzystencjalnych niepokojów, jakie trapiły samego Chandlera, jego epokę, a także kolejne pokolenia. W swej monografii autorka nie tylko barwnie i przekonująco przedstawia sylwetkę samego pisarza (postaci równie niestandardowej, jak wykreowany przez niego detektyw) oraz rzetelnie analizuje jego dorobek literacki, ale także poddaje namysłowi filmowe adaptacje prozy Chandlera. Film noir oraz neo-noir niewątpliwie unieśmiertelniły autora „Siostrzyczki”, a i on nadał im impet oraz ton.

Book review of „<<Świat był przemoczoną pustką>>. Czarny kryminał Raymonda Chandlera w literaturze i filmie” [‘”The world was a wet emptiness”. Raymond Chandler’s Crime Noir in Literature and Film’] (2015) by Patrycja Włodek. The book is devoted to the work of Raymond Chandler, one of the best crime writers ever. At the same time it is an attempt to rehabilitate a genre that is often looked down upon as popular or devoid of artistic qualities. Włodek convincingly shows that Marlowe and the world he lives in and in which he solves murder mysteries is not only literary fiction aimed at pure entertainment, but also a mirror image of existential anxieties that plagued Chandler, his era and the next generations. In this monograph the author not only vividly and convincingly presents the profile of the writer himself (a person as unique as the detective he created) and diligently examines his literary output, but also considers film adaptations of Chandler’s novels. Film noir and neo-noir undoubtedly immortalised the author of „The Little Sister”, but it is he who gave them the momentum and tone.

The article presents the beginnings of the hard-boiled novel and film noir, which date back to the 1920s and 1930s. Difficult economic and political conditions of that time gave rise to the new genres in literature and cinematography. The classic novels by Raymond Chandler and DashiellHammett present a world, where crime goes unpunished and order can never be restored. An important role in novel narrative, enabling the authors to build such a vision, is played by the city, presented as a labyrinth that lures the main character in. A lonely detective fights against injustice and often falls for a femme fatale, who abuses him for her own purposes. The paper analyses the history, evolution and characteristics of the literary genre in order to showcase the impact of hard-boiled novels on film noir, as well as to outline the principles of “simple” art of hard-boiled novels and film noir.

Historia powieści hard-boiled i filmu noir sięga lat dwudziestych i trzydziestych XX wieku. Trudne warunki ekonomiczne i polityczne tamtych czasów dały początek nowemu gatunkowi literatury i kinematografii. Klasyczne powieści przedstawiają świat, w którym zbrodnia pozostaje bezkarna, a porządek nigdy nie zostaje przywrócony. Miasto, przedstawione jako labirynt wciągający głównego bohatera, odgrywa ważną rolę w narracji. Samotny detektyw walczy z niesprawiedliwością i często zakochuje się w femme fatale, która wykorzystuje go do własnych celów. Artykuł analizuje historię i ewolucję owego gatunku literackiego oraz próbuje uchwycić prostą sztukę powieści hard-boiled i filmu noir.
