The article develops a debate about the social reconstruction of agriculture in the state of Rio de Janeiro, through an empirical case, the rural community of Sebastião Lan II. From a historical rereading of the territory of the São João River Valley, we weave relationships between the process of changing socioeconomic cycles in the territory with the environmental crisis and land concentration. We will reflect on emerging concepts in the relationship between empirical and theoretical research, in particular the notions of “desagriculturalização” and “rerruralização”. The research was developed in extension projects and socio-legal advice to social movements fighting for land reform and democratization of access to land. We will try to reflect on the notion of social reproduction of agriculture as a symptom of social conflicts, through which we will identify signs of resistance against socio-environmental injustices.

Since slavery, domestic service was one of the labor activities that most employed women, especially those of color, who until today is the portion of the population that occupies the most such activity in Brazil. However, the research presented aims to analyze the participation of European maids in Rio's domestic service, highlighting the ways in which they were inserted in the said activity, which nationalities were most demanded and offered, as well as investigating the circulation of these characters in the city of Rio of January. Thus, from the addresses provided in the advertisements, a mapping of such locations of the demands for foreign maids and their offer was made, thus verifying the spatialization of these characters in the Federal Capital.

This article presents an overview of how religious manifestations were represented in the book As religiões no Rio (1906), written by journalist and writer João do Rio (1881-1921). The historical approach is the city Rio de Janeiro, capital of Brazil during the First Republic. The theoretical contribution used for this research is the Cultural History and authors such as Roger Chartier, Michel de Certeau e Nobert Elias. It was realized that in the process of highlighting religions in Rio de Janeiro, João do Rio operationalized a classificatory duality to designate religious experiences in the late 19th and early 20th century. On the one hand there would be religions of French influence which were professed by the social elite, whose standards encompassed principles like sanitation, “civilization”, modernization and fear of risk of poverty. On the other hand, there were those religions regarded as “uncivilized” and “undeveloped”, which had a strong presence not only in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, but of the entire Brazilian Republic

The paper examines the impact of cinematic representations of impoverished areas of Rio de Janeiro in the film City of God on the growth of the demand for favela tours in this city. In the first two parts, I describe postmodern changes in culture, society and economy and theoretical explanations of production and consumption of tourist attractions. In the third part, I define contemporary practices of slum tourism and examine three examples of convergence of literal versus literary and visual slumming. In the last part, I analyse the narratives of City of God movie, taking into consideration the film-making process.

A Rio de Janeiro crossing during the Winter of 2011. Urban, social and economic contrasts and contradictions of a city that is preparing to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016. The ‘street cleaning’ of cidade maravilhosa: the next sporting competitions and respective ‘showcasing’ will show neither people living on the streets nor rampant drug trafficking. The city seems to look forward to the events while at the same time the common people have different opinions: from hopes of a new opportunity for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, to fears of new contradictions, speculations and iniquities.

Aim/purpose - Multiple factors affect a passenger's origin and destination airport choice. This study explores some of the leading indicators associated with performance in cities with more than one airport. Two important Multi-Airport Systems (MAS) in Brazil were the object of this study: São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos) and Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont and Galeão), the most significant demand-generating centers in the country and the most critical distribution centers of flights from South America. Design/methodology/approach - Using public databases presenting the evolution of supply and demand from 2013 to 2018, the evolution of flights, and the sales by airlines in the same period, we estimated a linear model using panel data on a multiple linear regression with fixed effects. Findings - One of the results observed is that competition between airlines positively affects prices for consumers, the industry, and tourism, which is vital for the country. Research implications/limitations - The limitation of the findings is the lack of current data. Originality/value/contribution - In filling the gap in the literature on the evolution of supply and demand in the Brazilian aviation market, the study evaluates some of the leading indicators associated with performance in cities with more than one airport.

The migrations of Northeastern people form new cultural territories in Brazil and reinvent their heritage, using allegories and symbols, and combining their various meanings given over time by innumerable “(re)invention” questions. The new cultural territories formed from the insertion of social subjects in metropolitan cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are making their marks and trajectories, whether in the neighborhoods or in the territories they adapt to their rep-resentations and cultural expressions. In these migratory processes, we perceive meanings and other aspects produced by an "image" of the Northeastern, allegorically represented in concepts and preconceptions throughout the generations of these migrants. Thus, it is possible to under-stand, from the mechanisms of this creation and representation, the diversified identifications that corroborate the understanding of what is the cultural territory and identities, especially per-meated by the idea of regionalization, criticized by the condensation already posed in the history of the Northeast and what it represents. As a methodology, the paper utilizes discourses produced by historical subjects, through Oral History, the various experiences that can delimit and define the reinventions and re-significances of cordel literature together with their suit as a national in-tangible heritage. From the territories and their images in the cities, the paper tries to apprehend their legitimacy and maintenance, both with reference to popular imagination, and in the nooks and crannies of the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, protagonists of these meanings of the migrant cordel heritage.

The article seeks to create an approach that would challenge the description of transformations of Santa Marta favela in Rio de Janeiro, which presents the ambivalent image of this space born after its pacification and seen in the prism of Edward Soja’s post-industrial analysis. In pursuing this, the author discusses the potential threats triggered by separation from the other parts of the city, gatekeeping, incrimination.  Finally, the text shows how urban restructuration Santa Marta favela articulates new solutions, despite its criminal history, through raising the interest of visitors by colouring the facades of residential houses at the foot of the hill in the framework of the project Oh Morro by Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn.
