Stereotyp jako „gotowa forma myślenia” zaliczany jest do kategorii przekonań, które następnie kierują oczekiwaniami osoby posługującej się stereotypem w stosunku do osoby lub grupy osób nim objętych. W przypadku Cyganów/Romów stereotyp jest wyjątkowo trwały i nie jest jednorodny. Obok zdecydowanie negatywnych wyobrażeń istnieją także wyobrażenia pozytywne. Na ziemiach polskich te dwa wyobrażenia o Cyganach /Romach funkcjonowały równolegle na przestrzeni stuleci.

Stereotype as a „ready-made form of thinking” belongs to the category of beliefs which direct the expectations of a person who uses stereotypes towards the stereotyped person or group. In case of the Roma/ Gypsies, the stereotype remains durable and diverse. Apart from the negative ideas, there are also positive ideas. In Poland these two ideas about the Rome/ Gypsies have functioned simultaneously for centuries.
