This paper focuses on the Russian and Polish receptions of the works of Roman Senchin, a leading representative of the New Realism Trend in Russian literature. The writer’s debut was his collection of short stories entitled Athens Nights (Афинские ночи), published in 2000. Since then, Senchin has written many works, including The Yeltyshevs (Елтышевы), published in 2009 and translated into several languages. His works are widely commented on, discussed, analyzed, and interpreted not only by Russian literary scholars, critics, and commentators of Russian cultural life, but also by Polish researchers investigating contemporary Russian literature. The article presents the views of literary critics and literary scholars concerning Senchin’s works, as well as reflections on their typical or dominant features. Despite widely differing points of view, Russian literary critics agree that Roman Senchin is the most pessimistic contemporary Russian writer.

Roman Senchin (born in 1971) is one of the most expressive spokesmen for his generation and one of the most prominent exponents of “new realism” of “the noughties”. The aim of this article is to identify central motifs in selected literary works of this contemporary Russian writer and literary critic, to present his artistic conception of creating a character, and to show distinguishing features and characteristics of Senchin’s “little man”. This paper analyzes Senchin’s three collections of short stories and stories: Nothing scaring (Ничего страшного, 2007), Moscow shadows (Московские тени, 2009), On the black stairs (На чёрной лестнице, 2009).

The article is an attempt to answer the question of the way noir functions in the contemporary prose devoted to Moscow and the extent to which it affects the city’s literary image. The paper interprets selected works by Vladimir Sorokin, Roman Senchin and Sergei Kuznetsov. The analysis conducted by the author of the paper leads to the conclusion that the presence of the so-called “black naturalism” in the Moscow texts does not spoil the image of Russia’s capital, but complements it with new elements (previously hidden, but present since the old days). Therefore, Moscow becomes more real, tangible, flesh and blood as well as suitable for the worldwide tendency to create megapolises.

This paper presents the current ecological situation in Siberia. The Zone of Submersion becomes the continuation of Valentin Rasputin’s Farewell to Matyora, transformation of its problems (using other artistic terms) into the future, at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Senchin depicts how villages are being submerged and writes about the displacement of population inhabiting flood plains on a macro scale. Senchin’s novel is a kind of document on the flooding zone and the construction of Boguczanska hydroelectric power plant on the Angara River. The author draws his reader’s attention to the fact that although the progress of civilization gives man new possibilities, he faces unprecedented choices and difficulties. Due to the displacement people lose their homes and lands, cultural monuments disappear under water. Thus, social issues are inseparably linked to the problem of ecology.

Деревня особенно сильно ощутила последствия режимной трансформации, оставаясь на периферии интересов центров власти. Кризис затронул не только экономику, но также семейные и соседские отношения, поскольку коммунизм нарушил гармонию человеческого сосуществования с природой и локальным сообществом. Автор статьи рассматривает разные аспекты деревенской повседневности конца ХХ века в Польше и России на примере Галицких рассказов Анджея Стасюка и Елтышевых Романа Сенчина. Сравнительный анализ позволяет выявить существенные различия в способах изображения польской и российской сельской действительности

The rural areas, remaining on the periphery of the power centres’ interests, especially strongly felt the effect of the systemic transformation. This crisis had a significant impact not only on the economic issues, but also on the family and neighbour relationships, since communism had damaged the harmony of human coexistence with nature and relations inside the local communities. The author presents a look at the rural daily life of the late twentieth century in Poland and Russia using examples of Tales of Galicia by Andrzej Stasiuk and The Yeltyshevs by Roman Senchin – books describing the reality of the countryside in each of the countries. A comparison of these two works reveals significant differences in the ways of capturing reality of the countryside in Poland and Russia.

Wieś szczególnie mocno odczuła skutki transformacji ustrojowej, pozostając na peryferiach zainteresowania władz centralnych. Kryzys dotknął nie tylko gospodarkę, ale także relacje rodzinne i sąsiedzkie, ponieważ komunizm naruszył harmonię koegzystencji człowieka z naturą i lokalną społecznością. Autor artykułu rozpatruje różne aspekty wiejskiej codzienności końca XX wieku w Polsce i Rosji na przykładzie Opowieści galicyjskich Andrzeja Stasiuka i Rodziny Jołtyszewów Romana Senczina. Analiza komparatystyczna pozwala na wyodrębnienie istotnych różnic w sposobach przedstawienia polskiej i rosyjskiej codzienności wsi.
