The review deals with the comparative analysis of the second edition of the book by Kharkiv literary critic, Doctor of Philology, Professor Leonid Genrikhovich Frizman (1935–2018) “In the circles of literary critics: Memoirs essays”, published in Kyiv and Moscow in 2017. The history of the book is described in the context of the author’s creative practices and similar experiences of Russian and Ukrainian literary critics; its substantive focus, the concept embodied in it, the personal composition, style, architectonics, illustrative component and artistic design are characterized in the review. The focus is on the study of the semantic role of the corrections and additions, made by the author in the second edition. The analysis takes into account the existing critical experience of perception of the first edition of memoirs in Russia to avoid unnecessary repetition.

This analytical study reflects upon the development and partial findings from Russian studies centers in the years 1950–1969, which were part of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences that had been founded in 1953. The interpretation intends to elucidate the significance and topical focus of these centers as well as discuss their findings in the area of research into the history of Russia and the USSR. There is particular emphasis on the institutional and thematic transformations they weathered, and it provides an account of the shaping of non-university-based Russian studies in Czechoslovakia. The study is based upon sources held by the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the AS CR.

This analytical study discusses the interest among Czech historians who research Russian history spanning from its earliest periods to 1917. It is a case study that demonstrates this interest in the example of the periodical the Slavonic Review. Part of this study is an analysis of the tradition of Czech (Czechoslovak) research into Russian history and the historians’ confrontations on the pages of the Slavonic Review. The work treats the topical and methodological transformations in the research chronologically, and pays tribute to the significant personalities who published historical Russian studies work in this periodical.

The present paper aims to detail the profile of the scientific-didactic illustrated journal “Russian Language Abroad”, established by International Association of the Russian Language and Literature Teachers and State Russian Language Institute and set in Lomonosov Moscow State University. A new project carried out by Pushkin State Russian Language Institute in Moscow involves a compilation of special issues of “Russian Language Abroad” under the title “Russian Studies Worldwide”.

Based on a study of the sources, the treatise provides an image of the Czechoslovak-Soviet Institute of the CSAS and its Russian studies themes in the first decade of the so-called normalization process with regard to the starting points of the research, thematic focus and personnel staffing. The influence of the political situation is considered in the study. Since there were a total of three of the Czechoslovak-Soviet institutes of this name developing Russian studies themes, the genesis of these workplaces and transformation of their thematic focus is also explained.

The article offers an annotated historiographical overview of literary-historical syntheses and lexicons dedicated to Russian literature that Czech scholars in the field of Russian studies after 1945. Russian literature often served as a space in which to discuss social and political problems, which is also illustrated by Masaryk’s voluminous synthesis Russia and Europe. Literary-historical syntheses and lexicons thus also serve those who are interested in Russian history and cultural history. Whereas historical Russian studies has various historiographical perspectives at its disposal, for literary-historical Russian studies the gap has now been filled by this article. Among the paramount works created in this field belong the histories of Russian literature of the 19th century (Parolek – Honzík, 1977) and 20th century (Hrala, 2007), On the other hand, Czech scholarly libraries are missing an erudite academic history of Russian literature from the oldest period to the present.

This study draws on archival documents to trace the concrete implementation of ‘normalisation processes’ in Czechoslovak society, research fields, and the university during the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on the field of Russian studies in the Charles University Faculty of Arts. What makes this case of particular interest is the story of a Russianist at Charles University who studied the languages and cultures of countries whose leadership had decided to send military forces to participate in the occupation of Czechoslovakia. Writing on events through her perspective (a student at the time), the author examines in particular the environment of the late 1980s. In terms of methodology, the study combines witness accounts with a more thorough and intensive approach to evaluating the impact of normalisation on the field before and after November 1989.

Rola Domenico de Vivo w rozwoju filologii rosyjskiej i włoskiej w drugiej połowie XIX wieku O Domenico De Vivo (1839-1897) wiadomo niewiele. Był uczniem włoskiego lingwisty Giacomo Lignany. Pracował jako profesor języka rosyjskiego i angielskiego w Asiatic College w Neapolu w latach 1868-1870, a następnie – od 1879 aż do śmierci w 1897 r. – jako wykładowca języka włoskiego na uniwersytetach w Dorpacie i Odessie w Cesarstwie Rosyjskim. De Vivo bronił swoich pomysłów dotyczących nauczania i uczenia się języków w swoich książkach Grammatica della lingua russa [Gramatyka języka rosyjskiego dla Włochów] (Dorpat, 1882) i Prakticheskoe rukovodstvo dlya izucheniya ital’yanskogo yazyka [Praktyczny przewodnik do nauki języka włoskiego] (Odessa, 1886; Odessa, 1890), a także w Dizionario Italiano-Russo. Slovar’ ital’yansko-russkiy [Słownik włosko-rosyjski] (Odessa 1894). Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie życia i twórczości De Vivo, stanowiących pierwszą zarejestrowaną próbę – według jego własnych słów – „promowania nauki języka rosyjskiego we Włoszech i nauki języka włoskiego w Rosji”.

Very little is known about Domenico De Vivo (1839-1897). He was a disciple of the Italian linguist Giacomo Lignana and worked as a professor of Russian and English language at the Asiatic College in Naples from 1868 to 1870, and then as an Italian language lecturer at the universities of Dorpat and Odessa in the Russian Empire from 1879 until his death in 1897. De Vivo championed his ideas on language teaching and learning in his books Grammatica della lingua russa [Russian Grammar for Italians] (Dorpat, 1882) and Prakticheskoe rukovodstvo dlya izucheniya ital’yanskogo yazyka [A Practical Guide to Learning Italian] (Odessa, 1886; Odessa, 1890), and in his Dizionario Italiano-Russo. Slovar’ ital’yansko-russkiy [Italian-Russian Dictionary] (Odessa 1894). The purpose of this article is to examine De Vivo’s life and works, which represent the first recorded attempt – in De Vivo’s own words – “to promote Russian language learning in Italy and Italian language learning in Russia.”

Sir Bernard Pares i szkoła studiów słowińskich w Londynie W artykule omówiono różnorodne działania wybitnego brytyjskiego historyka Sir Bernarda Paresa na rzecz rozwoju studiów rosjoznawczych i słowianoznawczych w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. Pares był autorem kilku książek i wielu artykułów o Rosji, a także redaktorem czasopism The Russian Review i The Slavonic Review. Założył również pierwszą Szkołę Studiów Rosjoznawczych na Uniwersytecie w Liverpoolu (1907) i przez dwadzieścia lat był dyrektorem Szkoły Studiów Słowiańskich i Wschodnioeuropejskich na Uniwersytecie Londyńskim (1919-1939). Ze względu na jego zainteresowanie polityką, historią i kulturą Rosji, częste i długie wizyty w Rosji w latach 1906-1919 oraz bliską przyjaźń z wieloma rosyjskimi liberałami, nominację na oficjalnego obserwatora w armii rosyjskiej w 1915 r. i na przedstawiciela Wielkiej Brytanii w armii Kołczaka podczas wojny domowej, Pares stał się jednym z najbardziej szanowanych brytyjskich ekspertów spraw rosyjskich i słusznie objął stanowisko dyrektora Szkoły Slawistyki. Ten artykuł zwraca szczególną uwagę na różne problemy finansowe i administracyjne, z którymi borykał się Pares jako dyrektor szkoły. Autor konkluduje, że Bernard Pares był niezastąpionym ambasadorem wszystkiego, co rosyjskie, tłumaczem rosyjskiej poezji i prozy, badaczem historii Rosji oraz organizatorem studiów rosyjsko-słowiańskich w Wielkiej Brytanii.

This article covers the diverse activities of the renowned British historian Sir Bernard Pares on the development of Russian and Slavic studies in the first half of the 20th century. He was the author of several books and a fair number of articles on Russia, edited the journals The Russian Review and The Slavonic Review. Pares also founded the first School of Russian Studies at the University of Liverpool (1907) and served for twenty years as Director of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University of London (1919-1939). Due to his interest in Russian politics, history and culture, frequent and lengthy visits to Russia from 1906 to 1919 and close friendship with many Russian liberals, his appointment as an official observer to the Russian army in 1915 and as a British representative to Kolchak’s army during the Civil War, Pares became one of the most authoritative British experts on Russia and rightfully assumed the position of Director of the School of Slavonic Studies. This article pays close attention to various financial and administrative problems that Pares had to cope with as the Director of the School. The author concludes that Bernard Pares’ role as a promoter of all things Russian, a translator of Russian poetry and prose, a researcher into Russian history and an organiser of Russian and Slavonic studies in Britain was indispensable.

The following article contains the bibliography of Polish literature focusing on Russian issues (Rossica), as well as on socio-historical Soviet issues (Sovietica) correlated with them. The presented register considers 349 bibliographic units altogether, all of which were printed in the years 1862–2015. It has been divided into two parts. The first part consists of a list of 22 lexical-bibliographical dictionaries in the field of Russian studies, the second part consists of a list of 327 bibliographic and biobibliographic works. The presented lists of bibliographic materials constitute an attempt to fill in the existing gaps in the field of Polish bibliographic lexicography. The Author’s intention is also to make an attempt to provide a bibliographic summary of the history of the research of Polish-Russian relations in different areas of knowledge, which has a tradition of over one hundred and fifty years. The study is of an interdisciplinary nature. The created bibliographic database is to serve as a useful compendium for the Russian studies.

Niniejszy artykuł zawiera bibliografię bibliografii piśmiennictwa polskiego, którego obiekt zainteresowania stanowią rossica, a także skorelowane z nimi społeczno-historycznie sovietica. Prezentowany rejestr bibliografii uwzględnia łącznie 349 pozycji bibliograficznych, które ukazały się w latach 1862–2015. Został on podzielony na dwie części. Na część I składa się wykaz 22 słowników leksykalno-bibliograficznych z zakresu rusycystyki, część II tworzy spis 327 pozycji bibliografii i biobibliografii. Przedstawione wykazy materiałów bibliograficznych stanowią próbę wypełnienia luki w polsko-rosyjskim dziale leksykografii bibliograficznej. Zamierzeniem autorki jest również próba dokonania bibliograficznego podsumowania półtorawiekowej historii badań relacji polsko-rosyjskich w różnych obszarach wiedzy. Badania mają charakter interdyscyplinarny. Stworzona bibliograficzna baza danych z założenia ma pełnić rolę przydatnego kompendium w rusycystycznej informacji naukowej.
