Problems of preservation and consolidation of the Ukrainian scientific potential raise the increasing concern of national researchers and draw their attention to the past periods of the Ukrainian science. As a significant share of the national scientific potential is accommodated in institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, analysis of data about the Academy and its members can reveal prospects of the Ukrainian science. The analysis contained in the article deals with personal data on all the Ukrainian academicians over the time of its existence, 1918-2008, divided into the periods of 1918-1930, 1930-1960, 1960-1990, 1992-2008. The personal data cover the number of scientists elected as a full member of the Academy, the age of election as a full member, scientific field of the elected, year of election, periods of birth, places of birth, HEEs graduated by full members, HEEs graduated by the largest share of full members, locations (cities) of the HEEs graduated by the largest share of full members, etc. The conclusion is made that the scientific potential of the NAS of Ukraine, accumulated at the level of full members of the NAS, could remain a factor of the strongest influence even in the periods of crucial socio-economic transformations, and now is able to be the consolidator of the intellectual capital of Ukraine.

His teaching work began while he was a university student. He taught in the Kiev Institute for Civil Construction Engineering during 25 years. Also, in 1975, when working in the Institute for Mathematics, he launched the scientific seminar on history of mathematics and mechanics, having great importance for fostering his disciples and, in this way, establishing his academic school. Bogolyubov could contribute significantly in science history of mathematics and applied mechanics by scrutinizing earlier publications (from XVIII century and on). As a result, novel and unknown materials were brought to scientific circulation, about the logic and continuity in the development of mechanisms in the worldwide context, the respective roles of national and foreign scientists, unknown biographic data about most distinguished ones.

The scientific potential and the research activities at Kyiv T.G.Shevchenko National University, which is a classical university and a research university (the ''research' status assigned in 2008), in 1996-1007 are evaluated. A short description of the University history beginning with 1994, when it was assigned the national university status, is given. The role and contributions of the University research is shown with respect to the students' training and the development of the Ukrainian economy, science and education. Data are given about numbers of students, specialties, the share of the University's research staff in the Ukrainian total, the number of academic schools, academicians of the NAS of Ukraine engaged in the University research, the publication activity, University research financing, the thematic plan of research by financing source, the performance and significance of the University post-graduate course (especially in view of the need to compensate for ageing of the University staff by recruiting post-graduates), international cooperation. The conclusion is made that, in spite of heavy losses, Ukraine still have high-performing HEEs capable to search for and develop new ideas and technologies, one of which is the Kyiv T.G.Shevchenko National University. It could not only pass through the crisis, but to keep its personnel and performance in R&D and lecturing, and avoid reductions of students.
