This article reviews empirical findings concerning motives behind securitization and its implications. It turns out that the main reasons for securitization are: earnings management, regulatory capital arbitrage, liquidity management and funding problems. Securitization favours risk taking by entities in bad financial conditions and weakens, in some cases, incentives for careful screening of potential borrowers. On the macroeconomic level securitization lowers credit interest rates in the long term.

The article proposes insurance of agricultural crop represented by hectare yield in Slovakia. There is a systemic risk, for which the fund from collected premiums may not be sufficient for the insurer. It therefore seeks reinsurance in the reinsurance market. If it is exhausted, the reinsurer transfers the unbearable part of the risk to the capital market by means of ILS instruments, namely CAT bonds. The indicator of a loss event is the value of the loss index. The diverse geographical relief of Slovakia causes different conditions for farmers to grow crops. We took wheat in our article. Different hectare yields are achieved due to different geographical conditions in the same production process. This causes a balance distortion between the amount of the same premium and the amount of the risk borne and the existence of a basis risk. Due to its elimination, we will divide growers according to cultivated land into agricultural production areas, where the achieved hectare yields are registered, and we will evaluate CAT bond for each of them. The risk is then transferred to the capital market. For a securitization process to be feasible, the tradability of a CAT bond is essential.

This summary study presents main sources, key objectives, theoretical and methodological framework, short analysis of four fundamental options of EU impact on border conflicts and the main recommendations and conclusions of the international research project named “The European Union and Border Conflicts: The Impact of Integration and Association (EUBorderConf)“. This project was primarily focused on research of EU impact and role in particular political dimensions and problems connected to border conflict issues. The international research team under the supervision of project coordinators from the University of Birmingham was dealing with the question of role which a process of EU integration and association can play in a specific border conflict case. The project research team has elaborated a model of four various pathways by which EU can have a direct or indirect impact on a concrete conflict case including a model of four conflict stages. This model is also largely based on process of conditionality and socialization. According to project authors the EU can have a positive or negative impact on a conflict according to suitability of chosen pathway. A model of conflict stages can serve for determination of negative or positive impact of EU.

The 2015 refugee crisis – as the mass influx of migrants from the Middle East is commonly dubbed – tested the European Union’s ability to react to large-scale humanitarian emergencies. Apart from various organizational, social and political changes that the 2015 refugee crisis has brought to the European Union, it has also marked the growing role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the EU’s asylum and migration policies. Drawing from the critical perspective of international relations and such concepts as securitization of migration, the paper aims to analyse the engagement of ICT by EU institutions and individual Member States during the refugee crisis in 2015.

According to polls, the proportion of Czech respondents who perceived irregular migration as a real and serious security threat doubled from 32% in 2014 to 65% in 2015. By means of a content analysis of the news stories published by three Czech online news portals, this study examines the extent to which images of a threat and an appeal for security were part of the media coverage of the European migration crisis. While only small differences in extent were observed among the three portals, the findings suggest that the crisis was depicted mainly in terms of governance, i.e. as a burden to the state or as a security threat. All three news portals gave prominence to qualities like urgency, extraordinariness, overload and insecurity, and attributed these qualities to the figure of an indefinite wave of migrants heading to Europe. The humanitarian dimension of the reported events was marginalised. The findings indicate a striking dependence on institutional sources, mainly government officials. Almost exclusive salience was given to the governmental agenda. Authorship of every other news story was assigned to the Czech Press Agency. Aforementioned partial characteristics of the coverage resulted in highly politicized image of the crisis, which to considerable extent was presented as a security threat.
