The paper focuses on the scientific research of prof. PhDr. Jozef Ružička, DrSc., who uncovered grammatical aspects of the Slovak to foreign students in his presentations at the Summer School of Slovak Language and Culture Studia Academica Slovaca. In his lectures, he helped participants to see Slovak as confident competitive Central European language which is able to respond to the dynamic changes resulting from the communication needs of the language users. Taking into account the long-term scientific research of Jozef Ružička, the author interprets the contribution of his lectures which were published in anthologies named Studia Academica Slovaca between 1965 and 1979.

The paper reflects the versatility with which Prof. PhDr. Jozef Mistrík, DrSc. (1921–2000) worked in the Studia Academica Slovaca centre, especially as the Director of the Summer School of Slovak Language and Culture. He carried out the function for two decades (1972 – 1991). Under his leadership, the SAS shaped from the point of view of its contents as well as methodology, and became a competitive institution, significantly contributing to the national interdisciplinary Slovakistics and its development abroad. Jozef Mistrík was an author of numerous original projects and products, up to now representing the SAS, but at the same time differentiating it from other institutions of similar focus of activity. With the establishment of the SAS Proceedings 40 years ago began the edition series of specific publication of the papers delivered as lectures during the individual summer schools. In his lectures, Jozef Mistrík presented in a particular manner the results of his academic research, especially in the field of stylistics, frequency research and grammatical and lexical structure of Slovak in confrontation with other languages. Thanks to his managerial and promotional skills, the SAS became popular in media, and its events also started being archived in the SAS chronicles, up to the present day still recording every year of the summer school and specifically giving evidence of the program and the participants of this international event.

The article introduces fundamental vectors and coordinates of the multi-faceted works of the Studia Academica Slovaca Centre for Slovak as a Foreign Language (SAS), which directly or in collaboration with departments of Slovak language and culture affiliated with universities abroad and contribute to the development of Slovak studies. As a specialized research and teaching department at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava, SAS educates foreign students studying at Slovak studies departments at the SAS Summer School and the Centre also offers a wide ranged presence in-class as well as distance teaching study program of Slovak studies during the academic year. It was at the Bratislava-based SAS Centre that the foundations were laid for the academic description and didactics of Slovak as a foreign language. Also, the team at the Centre authored textbooks for students as well as teacher’s books. The didactic strategy includes the hosting of methodology-focused webinars for instructors of Slovak as a foreign language working at schools and universities abroad.
