This paper examines list order of candidates in regional elections in Slovakia. We conducted an experiment with a randomized and rotated ballot ordering. Our results show that earlier positions on the list receive significantly higher portions of votes. This effect is even more substantial for candidates without public office although it works also for public office holders. Given the alphabet ranking used in regional elections in Slovakia, our study shows that candidates with surnames starting with letters from beginning of alphabet are given unfounded advantage over their rivals. In general, our findings problematize the fairness of the analysed elections.

The paper deals with the life and professional destinies of Marie Zdeňka Baborová (1877 – 1937), the first Czech woman-doctor of philosophy. It summarizes basic informations about the possibilities of higher study of women in the Czech lands at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It recalls the regulations that allowed women access to universities in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Using the example of Marie Zdeňka Baborová it demonstrates the problems that the first female students of the university had to face with during their studies and in building a scientific career.

It’s believed that older people are potentially rich source of volunteers and volunteering is perceived as beneficial for both society and individuals. Due to the ageing of the population, the influence of individual ageing on volunteering has become crucial. The age and cohort connections of volunteering in Czech society are explored in this paper. Moreover, the factors leading to volunteering are researched using binary logistic regression. Focus is put on changes over time and differences between older people and younger ones. The findings do not show differences in volunteering based on age but demonstrate that the attitudes supported by productive ageing and active ageing concepts are influential. The rate of volunteering in Czech society has not changed since the beginning of the 90s.

The article presents new facts and details on the life and work of architect Dušan Jurkovič (1868-1947), and exploiting recent research of archive documents submits novel findings on crystallization of his artistic profile. Its dominant point of interest is to elucidate Jurkovič's relations to Vienna that - due to the education gained at the Staatsgewerbeschule (1884-1899) as well as due to the diverse later contacts and impulses - had left distinct traces in architect's life and work.
