This study has been carried out to assess the tourism industry potential in the sub-region of Elbląg situated in the Province of Warmia and Mazury, using a SW OT analysis for this purpose. The evaluation of the tourism industry potential was based on groups of variables identifying structural and functional resources which condition the development of tourism. Particular factors were assessed within each of the four categories (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). Each factor was assigned a weight and a score on a 1–3 scale. The weaknesses of tourism in the Elbląg sub-region were essentially identified as inadequate management of the resources; the strengths were related to the natural assets found in this region. It has been concluded that the most serious threat to the development of tourism in the sub-region of Elbląg is a very poor transport accessibility level.

Celem badań była ocena potencjału turystycznego podregionu elbląskiego województwa warmińsko-mazurskiego przeprowadzona z wykorzystaniem analizy SW OT. Ocenę potencjału turystycznego dokonano w oparciu o grupy zmiennych dotyczących zasobów strukturalnych i funkcjonalnych warunkujących rozwój turystyki. Wyceny poszczególnych czynników dokonano w obrębie każdej z czterech kategorii (mocne i słabe strony, szanse i zagrożenia). Każdemu z czynników przypisano wagę oraz ocenę punktową w skali 1–3. W podregionie elbląskim słabe strony potencjału turystycznego związane były głównie z niedostatecznym zagospodarowaniem turystycznym, mocne strony w dużej mierze wynikały z walorów przyrodniczych występujących na tym terenie. Stwierdzono, że rozwojowi turystyki w podregionie elbląskim najbardziej zagraża bardzo zła dostępność komunikacyjna.
